Software Engineer Expert AI

Sydney Full time

Job Expectations

We have an exciting opportunity at nbn for a Software Engineer Expert AI. This role will report to the Manager DevSecOps AI.

A bit about your role

As a Software Engineer Expert AI, you will lead the design, development and delivery of high‑impact AI platforms and applications that solve meaningful business challenges across nbn. You will be working as a technical lead within the DevSecOps AI team, build full‑stack AI solutions from concept through to production, ensuring they are secure, scalable and reliable. Your work will span the entire application lifecycle, including infrastructure as code, automated testing, monitoring and deployment pipelines, enabling AI solutions to operate confidently in live environments.

In this role, you will work autonomously to deliver complex software outcomes while collaborating closely with other engineers to design solutions, review code and divide larger bodies of work. You will contribute deep technical expertise across cloud platforms, modern application architectures and AI‑enabled systems, helping shape how platforms are designed and how delivery work is structured. You will also guide and support junior engineers, fostering a culture of learning, quality and shared ownership as nbn continues to grow its AI capability.

A bit about you

You are an experienced software engineer with a strong foundation in building and leading full‑stack solutions within cross‑functional product teams.

Your background is in designing and delivering cloud‑native applications, with hands‑on experience working in AWS environments and using modern development practices across Python‑ and Linux‑based services, APIs and data‑driven systems. You are comfortable shaping platform architecture, defining how work is broken down, and guiding solutions from design through to secure, production‑ready deployment. You have worked across contemporary engineering toolchains, including CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code and containerised environments, and you value quality through automated testing, monitoring and observability.

You have a genuine interest in AI and its potential to improve efficiency, productivity and user experience, supported by experience working with machine learning, large language models and generative AI technologies. You enjoy applying AI‑assisted development tools and frameworks responsibly, and you are curious about how emerging techniques can be used to solve real‑world problems.
