Basel Full time

At Roche you can show up as yourself, embraced for the unique qualities you bring. Our culture encourages personal expression, open dialogue, and genuine connections,  where you are valued, accepted and respected for who you are, allowing you to thrive both personally and professionally. This is how we aim to prevent, stop and cure diseases and ensure everyone has access to healthcare today and for generations to come. Join Roche, where every voice matters.

The Position

Advances in AI, data, and computational sciences are transforming drug discovery and development. Roche’s Research and Early Development organisations at Genentech (gRED) and Pharma (pRED) have demonstrated how these technologies accelerate R&D, leveraging data and novel computational models to drive impact. Seamless data sharing and access to models across gRED and pRED are essential to maximising these opportunities. The new Computational Sciences Center of Excellence (CoE) is a strategic, unified group whose goal is to harness this transformative power of data and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to assist our scientists in both pRED and gRED to deliver more innovative and transformative medicines for patients worldwide.

Within the CoE organisation, the Data and Digital Catalyst (DDC) organisation drives the modernisation of our computational and data ecosystems and integration of digital technologies across Research and Early Development to enable our stakeholders, power data-driven science and accelerate decision-making.

As a Software Engineer, you will be a core contributor responsible for developing and maintaining reusable, cross-vendor frameworks for integrating with automated systems. You will implement features for robust system control, data extraction, and workflow connectivity for our complex integrated workcells. Your work will be essential in building the foundation for a standardized and scalable framework for lab automation across our research organizations.

The Opportunity

  • Design, develop, and test reliable, scalable, and maintainable software components for the cross-vendor automation control and data frameworks.

  • Implement features to enable robust system control, data extraction, and workflow connectivity for integrated workcells and automated laboratory landscape.

  • Contribute to the operational excellence of the framework, including designing and implementing monitoring, logging, and deployment pipelines (CI/CD) in a cloud-native environment.

  • Collaborate closely with senior engineers and the Team Lead on technical design and code reviews to ensure alignment with architectural standards.

  • Work with product managers and scientists to understand technical requirements and deliver high-quality, impactful software.

  • Support the integration of the Automation Core frameworks with downstream informatics systems for scientific analysis and workflow execution.

  • Be willing to span the stack and contribute where needed, even outside of your core area of expertise.

Who You Are

  • B.S. in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field plus 2+ years of professional experience in backend or data engineering roles.

  • Solid hands-on technical experience with principles related to distributed systems, software architecture, and system design.

  • Proficiency in Python and Java.

  • Working knowledge of cloud-native architectures (ideally AWS) and best practices for building scalable and reliable systems.

Preferred But Not Required

  • Experience in Pharma or Biotech, ideally with experience working with scientists or in a research environment.

  • Direct experience with automation control systems, integrated workcells, and interfacing with diverse laboratory automation systems (e.g., scheduling software, liquid handlers, robotic arms).

  • Front end development experience with Typescript/Javascript using modern frameworks.
