Job Description Summary:

Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship - (SURF) Program – Department of Pharmacology, Toxicology, and Therapeutics. The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program is basic research internship offered during the summer (June 8 - August 14, 2026). Undergraduate students accepted into the program will work in the laboratory of an individual faculty member at the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC), Department of Pharmacology, Toxicology, and Therapeutics.

The program is based on gaining experience in basic biomedical research and being introduced to the discipline of pharmacology and toxicology and presenting data in a typical graduate student seminar setting.

DEADLINE: All documents should be received no later than March 31, 2026.

Job Description:

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Perform basic research in pharmacology and especially toxicology in the Department

  • Study interactions between biological systems and chemical agents

  • Complete weekly discussion sessions with faculty members, postdoctoral fellows and current graduate students

  • Attend mandated educational sessions with faculty and graduate students over the 10-week program

  • Carry out a presentation highlighting the research conducted during the program at the SURF symposium

Required Qualifications

Education:

  • Undergraduate student enrolled at a college or university with a major in biomedical sciences

  • Minimum GPA of 3.0

This internship requires enrollment for a formal degree in the cited discipline area(s) to ensure that candidates have advanced knowledge, analytical skills and professional competencies necessary to perform the duties of the position.  The level of degree is commonly recognized as the standard qualification for similar roles in the public and private sector, ensuring that the university remains competitive with industry aligned practices, enhances collaboration with external partners, and supports the delivery of services and programs that meet professional and market-driven expectations.

Preferred Qualifications

Work Experience:

  • Experience in laboratory work in the Pharmacology or Toxicology field

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
