Job Summary: This position is located at the Fredericksburg HCC within the Central Virginia VA Health Care System in Richmond, Virginia, as a direct report to the Social Work Service, and is assigned to the Suicide Prevention Program (SPP) within the Mental Health Department.

Major Duties:

  • The incumbent suicide prevention coordinator (SPC) provides direct support to Veterans while fulfilling key outreach and training responsibilities as part of the VA's public health model. Serving as a subject matter expert (SME) for all matters related to preventing Veteran suicide, the incumbent is responsible for identifying, case managing, and supporting high risk Veterans within the Central Virginia VA Health Care system and coordinating strategies to increase the awareness and adoption of suicide prevention best practices within the community. Major duties include, but are not limited to: Responsible for prevention, intervention, postvention efforts, education and outreach, and suicide behavior and death reporting. Collaborates with other SPCs and VA at-large to share best practices through multiple touch points. Ensures reporting mechanisms are implemented for all suicidal behaviors occurring within the facility catchment areas, manages the Patient Record Flag Category 1-High Risk for Suicide (HRSPRF) process, and reviews the nature of care provided using a variety of tracking and reporting tools. Ensures that enhanced care and services, including intensified treatment, safety planning, and follow-up care for missed appointments, is provided for high-risk Veterans, and provides consultation to care providers actively involved with treating Veterans at elevated risk for suicide. Participates in suicide prevention activities by distributing promotional materials, engaging with stakeholders at event awareness tables, and engaging with high-risk Veterans. Oversees the daily operation of the program, develops policies and procedures for program operation, and prepares reports and statistics for facility, VISN, and national use. Provides analysis and evaluation of clinical program data and computerized programs to identify system-wide trends and needs to enhance the quality of service. Engages in public speaking during training events within the CVHCS and the community. Involves driving to events in the community. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications: Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Education: Master's degree in Social Work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the school of social work is fully accredited. Note: A doctoral degree in Social Work may NOT be substituted for the master's degree in Social Work. Licensure: Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level. Licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the advanced practice level which included an advanced generalist or clinical examination, unless they are grandfathered by the state in which they are licensed to practice at the advanced practice level (except for licenses issued in California, which administers its own clinical examination for advanced practice) and they must be able to provide supervision for licensure. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements stated above, the following qualification criteria must be met for each grade. The candidate's qualifications must clearly demonstrate the level of competence required for the grade. Social Worker (Program Coordinator), GS-12 Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. Experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills and judgment, demonstrating progressively more professional competency. Candidate may have certification or other post-master's degree training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship, or equivalent supervised professional experience. Licensure/Certification. Individuals assigned as social worker program coordinator must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level, and must be able to provide supervision for licensure. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: (a) Knowledge of program coordination and administration which includes consultation, negotiation, and monitoring. (b) Knowledge and ability to write policies, procedures, and/or practice guidelines for the program. (c) Ability to supervise multidisciplinary staff assigned to the program. (d) Skill in organizing work, setting priorities, meeting multiple deadlines, and evaluating assigned program area(s). (e) Ability to provide training, orientation, and guidance within clinical practice. Physical Requirements: Work is primarily non-strenuous but may require walking short to moderate distances, bending, twisting, typing, and the ability to lift and carry 5-20lbs.
