Senior Technical Product Owner – Commercial Pilot Training

AUS - Brisbane, Australia Full time
Senior Technical Product Owner – Commercial Pilot Training

Company:

The Boeing Company

Boeing Australia is currently seeking to recruit a Senior Technical Product Owner to be based in our Brisbane location in a hybrid capacity.

Boeing Global Services seeks a Senior Technical Product Owner to play a critical role in driving the successful delivery of a large-scale, next-generation pilot training product.

This position focuses on owning and managing the backlog for three simulation systems workstreams within a complex, geographically distributed program. Operating in a high-paced Kanban-based development environment emphasizing regular, frequent deliveries of working software, the Senior Technical Product Owner acts as the key interface between business stakeholders, engineering stakeholders, distributed development teams, and other parallel workstreams.

They translate high-level business needs, functional requirements, and non-functional requirements (such as performance, reliability, and integration standards critical to simulation systems) into detailed, actionable engineering tasks through close collaboration with development teams, while ensuring transparency, risk management, quality, and timely escalation of blockers.

About the Role:

  • Own and maintain the product backlog for three simulation systems workstreams, including creation, refinement, prioritization, and continuous grooming of epics, features, user stories, and technical tasks to maximize value delivery.
  • Collaborate closely with the Product Manager and business stakeholders to understand strategic priorities, high-level requirements, and pilot training objectives, then decompose them into granular, technically feasible engineering items.
  • Work hand-in-hand with distributed development teams across time zones to refine requirements, define clear acceptance criteria, break down work into manageable Kanban items, and ensure alignment on technical implementation approaches for simulation systems.
  • Facilitate effective communication and coordination between simulation workstreams and other program workstreams to manage dependencies, resolve cross-team impediments, and maintain overall program coherence.
  • Monitor and visualize workflow using Kanban boards, track cycle time, throughput, and work-in-progress limits to drive continuous improvement and sustain high-pace delivery cadence.
  • Capture and report accurate progress metrics, burndown/trend data, and status updates to project management and leadership, highlighting achievements, risks, and forecasts.
  • Proactively identify, assess, and manage technical and delivery risks within the simulation workstreams, implementing mitigation strategies and escalating critical issues to engineering leadership and project sponsors.
  • Ensure delivered increments meet required quality standards, non-functional requirements (e.g., simulation fidelity, latency, scalability), and regulatory/compliance needs relevant to pilot training systems.
  • Flag blockers, dependencies, or capacity constraints early, collaborating with teams and leadership to resolve them swiftly and maintain delivery momentum.
  • Participate in key ceremonies such as backlog refinement sessions, Kanban replenishment, stand-ups (as needed), and retrospectives to foster team collaboration and process optimization.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience)

  • Proven experience as a Product Owner, Technical Product Owner, or similar backlog/requirements ownership role in agile software development environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to enhance the development and production delivery of high-quality software that meets all stakeholder requirements.
  • Experience managing backlogs and driving delivery in complex, multi-team programs with significant technical and integration challenges.
  • Ability to work effectively in distributed, multi-time-zone settings with strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to influence without direct authority across distributed teams, engineering leadership, and business stakeholders.
  • Strong facilitation and negotiation skills to align priorities, resolve conflicts, and drive consensus on technical and delivery decisions.
  • Proactive risk ownership and escalation mindset with calm, decisive action under pressure.
  • Capacity to inspire and motivate cross-functional, distributed teams toward high-pace, quality-focused delivery.
  • Exceptional communication and stakeholder management, including the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences and business needs to engineers.
  • High emotional intelligence to navigate cultural/time-zone differences and build trust in distributed settings.
  • Adaptability and resilience in a dynamic, complex program environment with evolving requirements.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills to handle multiple workstreams and priorities.
  • Deep understanding of Kanban principles and practices, including WIP limits, flow metrics, classes of service, and techniques for managing variability in complex systems.
  • Proficiency in backlog management tools (e.g., Jira, Azure DevOps, or similar) and visualization of workflows in distributed environments.
  • Solid grasp of software engineering practices, including agile requirements elaboration, acceptance testing, CI/CD pipelines, and non-functional requirement specification.
  • Excellent ability to translate abstract business and functional needs into precise, testable engineering tasks while considering technical constraints and trade-offs.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to decompose complex simulation challenges and prioritize effectively under time zone and dependency pressures.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience)

  • 5+ years in agile product ownership or technical requirements roles, ideally in simulation, embedded systems, real-time software, or aerospace/defense sectors.
  • Track record of delivering high-frequency software increments in Kanban or continuous flow environments.
  • Experience interfacing between business/product management and engineering teams in large-scale programs.
  • Prior experience working on simulation, modeling, or training systems (e.g., flight simulators, virtual environments, or defense/aerospace applications).
  • Familiarity with geographically distributed agile teams and managing across time zones (e.g., effective async communication, overlap scheduling).
  • Exposure to regulated industries (aviation, defense, or safety-critical software) and associated standards.
  • Knowledge of DevOps practices, test automation in simulation contexts, or real-time systems development.
  • Certification or training in software development methodologies.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, or another technical field, and typically 10+ years’ relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
