This position works out of our Abbott Park, IL location in the ADD division working with the Transfusion Medicine group. We’re empowering smarter medical and economic decision-making to help transform the way people manage their health at all stages of life. Every day, more than 10 million tests are run on Abbott’s diagnostics instruments, providing lab results for millions of people.
What You’ll Work On
The Senior Systems Engineer is responsible for leading the planning, design, development, integration, and verification of complex systems across their life cycle. This role applies an interdisciplinary systems engineering approach to define requirements, translate product needs into subsystem specifications, and ensure compatibility across all physical, functional, and program interfaces. The Senior Systems Engineer drives risk analysis, design reviews, documentation, and cross‑functional collaboration to ensure products meet technical, regulatory, and quality standards.
This role is also critical in supporting commercialized products through field issue resolution, post‑market surveillance activities, complaint investigations, and system-level support of software releases. The Senior Systems Engineer proactively monitors system health, troubleshoots complex issues involving hardware, software, and reagents, and ensures seamless interaction between embedded software and hardware components.
In addition:
Define system requirements, specifications, and performance criteria.
Translate system-level requirements into subsystem and component-level specifications.
Integrate technical parameters and ensure compatibility across physical, functional, and program interfaces.
Lead system-level design reviews, define verification strategies, and assess performance against design specifications.
Support manufacturing through system-level expertise, troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and development of engineering solutions.
Lead structured problem-solving using investigative tools; mentor others on systematic problem-solving.
Apply process efficiency tools to improve workflows, engineering processes, and cross-functional collaboration.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of engineering tools, systems engineering practices, risk management, and quality subsystems.
Collaborate with design, software, test, technology, operations, and quality teams to optimize system performance and manage system interactions.
Resolve field escalations by performing deep system-level investigations and determining root cause.
Support a high volume of complaint investigations throughout the year, ensuring thorough technical assessments and effective corrective actions.
Participate in Post Market Surveillance activities, identifying trends, system risks, and opportunities for product improvement.
Provide system engineering support for software releases, ensuring compatibility and proper interaction between embedded software and hardware components.
Troubleshoot complex hardware, software, and reagent-related issues and collaborate with cross-functional teams to maintain system performance and compliance.
Ensure a deep understanding of how software algorithms control and respond to hardware operations, enabling robust system integration and post‑release support.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics.
Minimum 6 years of relevant experience in systems engineering
Demonstrated experience leading complex system and risk analysis.
Demonstrated ability to lead and utilize data to make decisions and influence stakeholders.
Demonstrated success in technical proficiency, creativity, and independent thought. Experience with system level concept creation, evaluation and innovation.
Experience with system analysis, model-based system engineering and system architecture.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Proven Knowledge of System Engineering principles or concepts.
Demonstrated ability to apply principles of systems thinking to accelerate performance.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in medical device development, quality systems, and regulatory compliance.
Experience supporting commercialized products, field investigations, and software release cycles.
Experience leading cross-functional teams in complex technical environments.

The base pay for this position is
$86,700.00 – $173,300.00In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
