Roche

Senior Software Engineer - Drug Discovery

South San Francisco Full time

A healthier future. It’s what drives us to innovate. To continuously advance science and ensure everyone has access to the healthcare they need today and for generations to come. Creating a world where we all have more time with the people we love. That’s what makes us Roche.

Advances in AI, data and computational sciences are transforming drug discovery and development. Roche’s Research and Early Development organizations at Genentech (gRED) and Pharma (pRED) have demonstrated how these technologies accelerate R&D, leveraging data and novel computational models to drive impact. Seamless data sharing and access to models across gRED and pRED are essential to maximising these opportunities. The Computational Sciences Center of Excellence (CS CoE) is a strategic, unified group whose goal is to harness the transformative  power of data and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to assist our scientists in both pRED and gRED to deliver more innovative and life-changing medicines for patients worldwide.

The Data and Digital Catalyst - Solutions group within the CS CoE leads the modernization of our computational and data ecosystems by integrating digital technologies across Research and Early Development to empower stakeholders, advance data-driven science and accelerate decision-making. Our team specializes in building Data Pipelines and Applications for data acquisition, collection, storage, transformation, linkage and sharing.

You will work closely with Data Engineers, Product Leaders, and Tech/ML Ops as well as directly with our key partners including Computational Scientists, ML Scientists, and Research Scientists. You'll build robust and scalable systems that unlock the potential of our diverse scientific data, accelerating the discovery and development of life-changing treatments for patients.

In This Role:

  • Work directly with cross-functional teams across the drug discovery research organization to deliver intuitive, sustainable software solutions addressing urgent scientific challenges.

  • Design and implement robust, scalable, and maintainable software platforms for collecting, structuring, and storing diverse scientific data that support advanced analytics, machine learning, and other data-driven initiatives.

  • Understand, maintain, and evolve existing critical applications into extensible platforms.

  • Own and drive software initiatives through design, implementation, testing, and deployment.

Who You Are:

  • Background in drug discovery, protein science, or related scientific field.

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or similar technical field, or Ph.D. in Protein Science or a closely related field, plus 6+ years of professional experience in full-stack software development.

  • Strong proficiency in Python or Java, plus experience with a frontend or backend web framework.

  • Experience with databases, data transformations, and data access.

  • Experience working on cloud-native architectures in public clouds (ideally AWS).

  • Proven understanding and application of engineering best practices and ability to quickly adapt to new technologies.

  • An AI-first approach to development, user experience, and data access.

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to build trusted partnerships with internal and external collaborators.

  • Curiosity and a passion for continuous learning.

Even if you don't feel that you meet every single requirement, we still encourage you to apply. We’re eager to hear how your unique background and passion for our mission make you a great fit for our team.
