Job Summary: Miami VA Healthcare System is looking for a Senior Social Worker- Housing and Urban Development/ VA Supportive Housing (HUD/VASH) for their Flagler VA Clinic located at 1492 West Flagler Street, Miami, FL 33135. Senior Social Workers have experience that demonstrates possession of advanced practice skills and judgment.

Major Duties:

  • Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional Senior Social Workers in the Healthcare for Homeless Veterans Program (HCHV) work independently in the field in community-based settings, and are expected to make clinical decisions in complex cases with no immediate supervision or access to resources. Social Workers for the Housing and Urban Development/VA Supportive Housing (HUD/VASH) program will work with formerly homeless veterans in their own homes, providing advanced level clinical services and long-term clinical case management, which involves problem-solving skills and the ability to maintain an ongoing therapeutic relationship, at times, over the course of several years. The Senior Social Worker is expected to display a high level of professionalism and organizational stewardship in all dealings with the community as a representative of the Department of Veterans Affairs. The Senior Social Worker is required to become familiar with relevant accreditation standards, including the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Facilities (JCAHO). Additional duties include but not limited to: Interviews veterans and their family members/significant others to establish facts about the veteran's homelessness situation, presenting problems and their causes, and the impact of such problems on the veterans functioning and health as part of a comprehensive psychosocial assessment. Interprets and explain VA's treatment and benefit programs. Reviews all data, subjective and objective, makes a clinical assessment, identifying needs and strengths. Effectively uses professional skill, objectivity and insight. Uses advanced clinical training, insight and experience to interpret data and to identify viable treatment options. Assesses high risk factors, acuity and needs for services. Monitors and assists veterans to maintain appointments at VAMC and other community agencies for medical, psychiatric, substance abuse, vocational and other services consistent with veteran's goals associated with healthful independent living. Refers veterans to appropriate VA and other government/ community services including: local shelters, food banks, employment services, veteran's benefits, and social security applications. Assists veterans who encounter problems obtaining services from the VA and other service delivery agencies, by increasing their problem solving/social interaction skills. Will be expected to conduct community-based home/field visits to formerly homeless veterans who are admitted to HUD-VASH and are housed by one of the partnering Public Housing Authorities (PHA). The HUD-VASH Program is assigned a fleet of government issued vehicles, and the incumbent will provide documentation of having a valid State drivers license, as well as provide evidence of the annual required Talent Management System (TMS) trainings prior to operating a government vehicle. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, with rotating tours of duty as needed. The Social Work Service also requires weekend/holiday coverage approximately twice annually on the inpatient medical unit. Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year) Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience. Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child. Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66. Qualifications: Applicants pending the completion of educational, or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f). Education: Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may NOT be substituted for the master's degree in social work. Licensure: Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: In addition to meeting the basic requirements stated above, the following qualifications criteria must be met in determining the appropriate grade assignment of candidates. GS-12 Senior Social Worker candidates must have the following: Experience/Education: The candidate must have at least two (2) years of experience post advanced practice clinical licensure and should be in a specialized area of social work practice of which, one (1) year must be equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. Senior social workers have experience that demonstrates possession of advanced practice skills and judgment. Senior social workers are experts in their specialized area of practice. Senior social workers may have certification or other post-masters training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship or equivalent supervised professional experience in a specialty. Licensure/Certification: Senior social workers must be licensed or certified by a state at the advanced practice level which included an advanced generalist or clinical examination, unless they are grandfathered by the state in which they are licensed to practice at the advanced practice level (except for licenses issued in California, which administers its own clinical examination for advanced practice) and they must be able to provide supervision for licensure. Physical Requirements: The physical demands of the work requires use of fingers; moderate walking and standing; near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; far vision correctable in on eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; hearing aid permitted; clear speech; emotional stability; moderate duty.
