Job Summary: The Miami VA Healthcare System's Surgical Service is seeking an experienced and dynamic Podiatrist that specializes in the diagnosis, treatment and perform surgical or non-surgical procedures. Ideal applicants are those who want to contribute to the achievement of quality care standards, as well as the growth and development of a VA academic hospital program. You must be an excellent communicator and team player who is adaptable to the needs of a growing medical center.

Major Duties:

  • The Podiatrist duties consist of but are not limited to the following: Uses sound clinical judgment in assessing, planning, implementing, documenting and evaluating care, resulting in a positive outcome/improvement in a patient population at the program or service level: Provides leadership in managing/coordinating care for patients, assuming responsibility and accountability for actions. Completes initial assessments and reassessments of patient's condition and response to treatment and other clinical findings. Initiates follow-up as needed and documents using clear, concise and objective data. Investigates complex patient care problems and promptly seeks consultation and solution(s). Develops and implements a plan of care to meet individual patient or population specific needs, including self-care and treatment measures. Modifies approach based on knowledge of human behavior, motivations, and reactions to situations. Initiates and/or recommends laboratory tests, diagnostic studies and/or specialty referrals based on protocols, clinical practice guidelines and/or standards of care. Prescribes and/or recommends laboratory tests, diagnostic studies, and/or medications based on current medical center, VHA, and DEA policy and within scope of practice. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30 AM - 4:00PM

Qualifications: Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. . Podiatrist Basic Requirements Degree as a doctor of podiatric medicine, or its equivalent, from a school of podiatric medicine approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Approved schools are United States schools of podiatric medicine approved by the Council on Podiatry Education of the American Podiatry Association in the year in which the degree was granted. ~AND~ Completed, or currently completing, residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. VA Podiatrists involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status. Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education, the Council on Podiatric Medical Education, in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or (2) Other residencies and training experiences, or their equivalents, which the local Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training. ~AND~ Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice Podiatry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia. Preferred Experience: Successful completion of one (1) year surgical residency, or a one (1) year postgraduate training program in podiatric orthopedics, o a one(1) year postgraduate training program in primary podiatric medicine. Both the surgical and the postgraduate training programs must be approved by the Council on Podiatric Medical Examination (CPME). Board qualified or board certified by a Council on Podiatric Medical Education certification board, or other equivalent certification to grant surgical privileges. This examination is administered by VA Occupational Health. The work requires long periods of standing, walking, sitting, lifting, bending, pushing, pulling and repetitive computer data entry. May come in contact with patient body fluids. Routinely works closely with airborne/blood borne infectious patients. Possible exposure to infectious diseases. Has some lifting and carrying up to and over 45 pounds. Use of fingers, both hands and eyes are required. Hearing aid is permitted. Must have the ability to distinguish basic colors & shades of colors. May operate a government vehicle to drive up to 4 hours one way to other sites. Overtime may occasionally be required on short notice, and the ability to be flexible in regard to patient need is critical. Incumbents must be physically and mentally able to efficiently perform the essential functions of this position without hazard to themselves or others.
