About the role
Argenx is establishing a new department dedicated to small molecule and peptide drug discovery. We are seeking a Senior Scientist in Medicinal Chemistry to play a pivotal role in shaping this capability and advancing preclinical projects. This position offers the opportunity to influence strategy, drive innovation, and deliver high-quality drug candidates that make a real impact.


This position is based at our facility in Zwijnaarde (Ghent), and expects on-site presence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead Discovery Projects: Partner with lead biologists to progress programs from hit identification through to clinical candidate nomination, ensuring timely delivery of high-quality candidates.
  • Design and Optimise Molecules: Collaborate with CROs and expert consultants to design novel compounds addressing identified challenges and improving candidate profiles.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with internal experts in computational chemistry, ADME/Tox, IP, CMC, and pharmacology to integrate multidisciplinary insights.
  • Innovation & Technology: Stay at the forefront of developments in small molecule and peptide therapeutics. Champion the use of AI, machine learning, and in silico approaches to accelerate design–make–test–analyse cycles.
  • Data Management: Establish efficient workflows for capturing, integrating, and analysing data from multiple partners.
  • Communication: Provide clear updates on progress, challenges, and solutions to stakeholders and project teams.
     

Profile

  • PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant chemical science, with 8+ years of experience in biotech or pharma.
  • Proven track record in design and synthesis of small molecules, with experience advancing projects to preclinical development.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of presenting complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English to ensure clear and effective information exchange.  
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and address challenges proactively.
  • Dynamic and practical problem-solving approach with a focus on delivering tangible results.
