As a leading international provider of high-quality bibliometric/research evaluation services, the Analytical and Data Services (ADS) team helps position Elsevier as a trusted partner of the leading academic institutions, funders, and governments it serves. Our team is responsible for both commercial projects and strategic collaborations in research evaluation and research analytics. We deliver bespoke solutions to the market, helping our clients (mainly research administrators or research managers) assess research landscape and evaluate research performance.
About the role
As a Senior Research Analyst, you will be a part of a global team of data analysts and data scientists. Experienced in bibliometric analysis and/or research evaluation studies, you will be working directly with clients to understand and meet their research analytics, strategy and evaluation needs, providing meaningful insights into the questions they have. You will work independently or lead a small project team to ensure project delivery in time, in scope and of high quality.
Responsibilities
As a Senior Research Analyst, the candidate will be able to work independently or lead analytical projects for clients. The main tasks will be to lead the design, execution and validation of analytical projects or research evaluation studies through:
Communicating with clients to understand their needs
Translating client needs to research questions
Drafting proposals to suggest solutions to client needs
Preparing/conditioning data
Computing indicators
Analyzing data (including descriptive statistics, as well as statistical modelling)
Producing/developing visualizations (use Tableau or some other analytical tools)
Providing and writing meaningful narratives and insights based on analytical findings
Managing client expectations and addressing their questions related to analysis
Presenting the analytical work to the client or wider audience
As part of this work, this role will entail a mix of management, coaching/validation and execution for each of the above tasks. Coaching entails developing and delivering tutorials and trainings on how to best execute bibliometric analysis projects. Additionally, the candidate is expected to contribute to developing new ways (e.g., new indicators, or new analytical approaches) of supporting the evolving needs of academic and government organizations.
Requirements
Have a Bachelor or Master’s degree, preferably in Science or Technology fields, or Statistics, or Econometrics. A degree in library studies or bibliometrics is a clear plus.
Experience in the analysis, visualization and interpretation of results to deliver intuitive insights in support of evidence-based decision making using a variety of formats (data books, Tableau dashboards, presentations, written reports, etc.).
Able to extract, transform, load, curate and enrich data from various sources, as well as experience in data modelling. Ability to code is a plus (SQL, Python, Pyspark, etc.).
Experience with Tableau, R and other data visualization software is a plus
Be a trusted team player, while can also work independently on analysis. Able to manage multiple projects at different stages, working in an agile way as well as prioritize and signal challenges early on. Project management experience is an important plus.
Customer-facing skills, with the ability to manage client relations (active listening, building trust, presenting, addressing comments, etc.).
Preferably has experience with one or a combination of the following: bibliometrics, research and evaluation theory, and study design.
Language skills, have English as a working language, being able to communicate in English both verbally and in written form. Proven records of drafting analytical reports in English is not a must but is a plus.
Familiarity with the research ecosystem in China and globally, experience working with the research community are preferred.
The person needs to have a good eye for data, be able to generate insights from data, and present complex issues or complicated analytical results with clear and insightful data visualization and messages. He or she is expected to manage the analytical project to see to its execution and delivery, sometimes with the need to manage a small project team.
