About the Position:
The Senior RAN Engineer will be primarily responsible for the testing, integration, commissioning, and optimisation of Radio Access Networks (RAN) across a range of rail telecommunications projects.
This role will ensure that all testing and integration activities are carried out in accordance with approved engineering documentation, project quality requirements, and site-specific safety and access requirements. The successful candidate will also support broader telecommunications system delivery through effective coordination of materials, field activities, and engagement with internal and external stakeholders.
This position will have a strong focus on field delivery, testing, and technical assurance of radio systems within operational and brownfield rail environments.
Key Responsibilities
Deploy, configure, test, and optimise Radio Access Networks (RAN) to ensure high availability, performance, and reliability.
Integrate and configure BTS / radio equipment across GSM-R and related rail communications networks, including above-ground and tunnel environments.
Execute site testing, commissioning, and integration activities in accordance with approved procedures and project documentation.
Conduct drive testing, RF performance analysis, and produce detailed test reports and technical assessments.
Troubleshoot and resolve RAN-related issues during testing, integration, and commissioning phases.
Support broader telecommunications system integration and delivery activities, including coordination with signalling, ETCS, networking, power, and infrastructure interfaces where required.
Ensure all activities are completed in compliance with site safety, access, and rail corridor requirements.
Assist with planning and coordination of required materials, equipment, and site resources to support delivery activities.
Liaise with internal engineering teams, subcontractors, suppliers, and client stakeholders to ensure successful project outcomes.
Skills & Experience
Minimum 10 years’ experience in RAN design, testing, integration, and commissioning, preferably on large-scale Australian infrastructure or rail projects.
Tertiary qualifications in Engineering or a related discipline, suitable for full membership with Engineers Australia.
Demonstrated experience in the design, integration, testing, and optimisation of GSM, GSM-R, LTE / 4G, and 5G radio technologies.
Strong understanding of RF principles, radio planning, coverage, interference, and performance analysis.
Hands-on experience with drive testing tools, RF analysis, and test reporting.
Proven ability to troubleshoot complex RAN and telecoms integration issues in live or operational environments.
Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, and site-based activities.
Well-developed communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to work effectively across engineering, project delivery, subcontractor, and client teams.
Experience working in rail corridor, tunnel, or brownfield infrastructure environments will be highly regarded.
