Retirement Manager Engagement Platform (Data Focused)

The Group

The Retirement business unit focuses on helping individuals achieve better retirement outcomes by partnering with institutional clients in the defined contribution and workplace markets. This is a high growth area for Morningstar, supporting a diverse product suite and unique client base. By constantly evolving our solutions and solving our client's problems, we believe we are positioned well for continued future growth.

Role Overview

Morningstar seeks a Senior Product Manager to work in the Managed Accounts group. Morningstar® Retirement Manager is an online service offered by employers to help their employees save and invest in their workplace retirement accounts.  We are seeking a Senior Product Manager to own engagement capabilities for our managed account platform, with a primary focus on using a third-party user engagement platform, data driven engagement across managed accounts user journeys (e.g., enrollment, advice flow completion, post enrollment engagement).

This is a data focused platform PM role, accountable for the behavioral data model, event taxonomy, segmentation logic, experimentation strategy, and measurement framework that power RM engagement. The role partners closely with managed accounts product teams, Engineering, Marketing Ops, Marketing, and Compliance to ensure engagement is orchestrated, scalable, compliant, and grounded in user behavior—not manual campaigns.

Core Responsibilities

RM Engagement Platform Ownership

  • Own the engagement platform strategy for managed accounts, ensuring engagement supports product goals, outcomes, and ongoing participant engagement.
  • Translate managed accounts product workflows and user states into event driven engagement opportunities (e.g., step abandonment, advice completion, enrollment milestones).
  • Own the segment taxonomy and frequency capping strategy — ensuring no participant receives conflicting or redundant messages across product surfaces
  • Ensure engagement logic scales across multiple recordkeepers, RIA’s and plan configurations without custom rebuilds.

Data & Analytics Ownership

  • Own the managed account behavioral event taxonomy, segmentation logic, and eligibility rules in partnership with Engineering.
  • Define and own canonical engagement success metrics and use event‑level data (funnels, cohorts) to prioritize improvements.
  • Own KPI reporting for the engagement platform: enrollment conversion rate, time-to-enroll after nudge, cross-PM message conflicts, campaign launch velocity, and email quality metrics
  • Partner with Marketing Ops to review analytics and surface actionable insights for product and leadership stakeholders
  • Lead A/B testing strategy — hypothesis design, variant logic, sample sizing, and winner analysis — to continuously improve engagement outcomes

Journey Architecture & Governance

  • Own engagement platform canvas and journey architecture for engagement, ensuring reusability, compliance readiness, and clear governance.
  • Establish and govern a lightweight intake model so product PMs route engagement requests through this platform role.
  • Set and enforce frequency and conflict‑resolution rules across managed accounts product surfaces.
  • Prevent message conflicts and ensure a coherent, user-first experience as participants move between enrollment, allocation, contribution, and advisory product surfaces

Cross Functional Leadership

  • Partner with Engineering on event instrumentation, data pipelines, and integrations supporting managed account engagement.
  • Work with Marketing Operations, Marketing, and Compliance to enable scalable, pre‑approved engagement execution.
  • Act as the single accountable owner for managed accounts engagement decisions across teams.

Platform Operations & Quality

  • Own platform level quality, analytics definitions, and governance standards for managed accounts engagement.
  • Ensure product or program specific branding, disclosures, and plan level content are dynamically managed (not manually configured) via connected content.

What Success Looks Like

  • Managed Accounts engagement operates as a product-led, data driven platform providing a seamless cohesive engagement experience across all products.
  • Product management can trigger personalized, compliant engagement without ongoing engineering dependency once instrumentation is in place.
  • Engagement outcomes are measured, iterated, and improved over time.

Required Qualifications (Non‑Negotiable)

  • Minimum of six years of relevant and progressive experience as a product manager with senior level ownership of a platform or shared capability
  • Strong knowledge of product development, lifecycle and agile methodologies
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong customer service focus
  • Demonstrated experience as a data focused product manager who:
    • Owns metrics and instrumentation
    • Uses behavioral data to drive prioritization and decisions
  • Hands on experience with event based or behavioral data models
  • Strong analytical fluency (funnels, cohorts, experimentation)
  • Strong data fluency: comfortable reading segment definitions, reviewing event schemas, and working directly with analysts and engineers on data pipeline questions without needing everything translated
  • Experience managing cross-functional stakeholder relationships where you did not have direct authority — aligning engineering, marketing, compliance, and operations teams toward a shared outcome
  • Track record of shipping measurable improvements to user engagement or conversion metrics
  • Technical literacy with APIs, integrations, and data pipelines, enabling strong partnership with Engineering
  • A bachelor’s degree is required

Nice to Have

  • Experience operating in regulated or high-risk environments (retirement or financial services)
  • Familiarity with Braze or similar engagement orchestration platforms
  • Demonstrated experience with a modern customer engagement platform — Braze, Iterable, Salesforce Marketing Cloud, or equivalent — with hands-on involvement in campaign logic, segmentation, and journey architecture (not just stakeholder oversight)
  • Experience supporting client facing discussions in complex integration environments
