Senior Paint & Roto ArtistReq ID:
10146116Job Description:
Founded by George Lucas, ILM is the leading effects facility in the world, with studios located in San Francisco, Vancouver, London, Sydney, and Mumbai. ILM has created visual effects for over 325 feature films and has played a key role in seven of the top 10 worldwide box-office hits of all time. At the forefront of the digital revolution, the company continues to break new ground in visual effects, VR, AR, and Immersive Cinema. You can see some of our current projects here.
As a Mid/Senior Paint & Roto Artist, you are responsible for delivering high-level invisible effects tasks with minimal supervision. You will use your expert artistic eye to seamlessly remove plate artifacts, reconstruct backgrounds, and generate complex mattes that realise the creative direction of the VFX Supervisor.
You should possess a strong foundation in the "layering math" of digital imaging, including a deep understanding of motion, colour, and grain. We look for artists who are not only technical experts but proactive problem-solvers who can mentor others and push the boundaries of our current pipeline.
Deliver complex shots involving tracking, plate reconstruction, and matte extraction using Silhouette and Nuke
Take ownership of shots and sequences, proactively offering "pluses" and alternate technical approaches to improve the final look
Attend dailies, follow up on notes, and work across departmental lines to develop efficient techniques for the show
Balance your own shot work with active mentoring of junior artists, providing artistic feedback and helping with performance reviews
Assist in creating generic scripts and templates and contribute to productivity enhancements within the studio pipeline
Help others troubleshoot difficult setups and maintain high-quality standards through QC of internal or vendor work
Proficient in Silhouette (advanced hand-painting) and Nuke, with a solid understanding of concatenation, filtering, and colour space
A strong understanding of composition, lighting, and colour to ensure seamless photorealistic integration
Strong time management skills and the ability to provide accurate task estimations for production scheduling
Experience in mentoring others and a desire to share "tips and tricks" through show-and-tells
A dependable team player who remains flexible under pressure and is always curious about new learning opportunities
You should possess an adaptable mindset regarding new methodologies, showing an eagerness to integrate emerging technologies and automated processes into your daily creative toolkit and workflow
