Role summary:


We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our DevOps-focused team within the Internal Developer Platforms (IDP) organization. IDP enables athenahealth R&D teams to manage the complexity of our technology landscape, improve developer productivity, and support the delivery of products that operate across an open ecosystem.

In this role, you will help build and evolve the platforms, tooling, and automation that support software delivery at scale. You will work on systems that are central to athenahealth’s software development lifecycle, including deployment infrastructure, source control platforms, and tools that improve releasability, traceability, and developer experience. This is an opportunity to contribute to high-scale infrastructure, partner across engineering teams, and help improve the reliability and efficiency of how software is built and delivered.

Team summary:


The team is a large, established team with broad ownership and an important role in developer experience across athenahealth. The team supports the deployment of production code to thousands of servers across multiple data centers on a regular basis and maintains highly automated deployment capabilities that continue to evolve.

The team also supports source control systems and the surrounding tooling that enables code tracking, release readiness, and lifecycle visibility across software delivery. Team members work with a broad set of technologies, including AWS, Jenkins, Harness, Perforce, Git, Java, Perl, Python, Ansible, and server management tools. This role offers strong exposure to infrastructure at scale and the opportunity to contribute to systems that are foundational to engineering productivity.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Design, build, maintain, and improve tools, services, and automation that support software delivery, deployment, and developer productivity.
  • Conduct code reviews and provide actionable feedback to support code quality, maintainability, and engineering best practices.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineering, product, and operations, to deliver scalable and reliable solutions.
  • Develop domain expertise in the team’s systems, platforms, and workflows, and apply that knowledge to improve outcomes.
  • Take ownership of services and tools managed by the team and support their reliability, performance, and continuous improvement.
  • Contribute to deployment infrastructure, source control workflows, and supporting systems that improve releasability and software lifecycle visibility.
  • Troubleshoot issues across development and operational environments and support effective resolution of system or workflow problems.
  • Participate in technical design discussions and contribute to engineering decisions that improve platform capabilities and team effectiveness.
  • Use AI tools, where appropriate, to improve engineering productivity through tasks such as summarizing technical documentation, identifying patterns in logs or incidents, generating draft automation scripts, or accelerating investigation workflows, while validating outputs for accuracy, security, and maintainability.

Expected Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree, bootcamp completion, or equivalent practical experience, including relevant internships or professional work.
  • 4+ years of software engineering experience with strong computer science and problem-solving fundamentals.
  • Experience with at least one modern programming language such as Python, Java, C#, C++, Perl, or JavaScriptPython or Java preferred.
  • Knowledge of Unix/LinuxRESTful APIsAWSmicroservicesDocker, and distributed systems concepts
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills with the ability to work effectively across technical teams.

Nice to Haves:

  • Experience with source control management systems; experience with Perforce is preferred.
  • Previous DevOps experience is not required, but experience working close to infrastructure, automation, or build and release systems is valuable.
