Who You Are

At Justworks, you’ll enjoy a welcoming and casual environment where you manage and improve the payroll tax amendment process across all required areas. You'll work on making the process scalable, auditable, and repeatable. Your job is to tackle system and operational problems, set the process rules, and handle compliance risks to avoid penalties. 

You own this process and make sure it fits with the company's compliance and drive operational efficiency through process improvement, automation, and advocating for improvements to our product. Look for ways to make things more efficient, be comfortable with technology, and show patience and determination while working with people in a fast-paced environment. You will be the primary subject matter expert and strategic leader for all payroll tax amendment policies and procedures, advising executive leadership on potential risks and opportunities.

As the Senior Manager, Payroll Tax Amendment you'll build and coach the team that handles the tax amendments to do great work. You will make sure routine and complex tasks are executed to keep clients compliant. This means working with other teams to solve customer issues and talking with federal, state, and local tax offices.

Your Success Profile

What You Will Work On:

Strategic & Policy Leadership:

  • Elevate the strategic vision for critical tax compliance processes, leveraging deep business acumen to define and finalize internal policy. Partner with Legal, Compliance, and Accounting to establish future-state standards and mitigate risk at scale.
  • Collaborate with Product and Engineering to re-architect data extraction logic, ensuring accurate and minimal payroll data for tax amendments, driving efficiency and minimizing cost of service delivery.
  • Ensure business continuity and mitigate knowledge transfer risk by thoroughly documenting core logic, error handling, and reconciliation processes, providing executive-level insight into operational stability.

Amendment Process & System Integration:

  • Integrate the amendment process with comprehensive workbooks to ensure data consistency, accuracy, and detailed audit trails, providing valuable insight into process integrity.
  • Automate workflow to reflect changes/approvals in associated workbooks and provide accurate, in-depth reports and analysis, maximizing efficiency at scale.
  • Implement advanced formulas for automatic calculation of tax implications for robust data validation, directly impacting the cost.
  • Administer and document the approval process within workbooks, including electronic signatures and date stamps, upholding audit standards at scale.
  • Establish workbooks as the centralized information and tracking hub for all amendment-related status and data, offering real-time operational insight.

Team Management & Development:

  • Build, lead, and manage a new, high-performing team of Tax Amendment professionals responsible for all filings across all payroll models, ensuring coverage and compliance at scale.
  • Perform all managerial duties: hiring, performance management, and separation, informed by business acumen to staff for efficiency and future growth.
  • Mentor team leads and specialists, fostering a culture of openness, integrity, and cross-functional collaboration, cultivating internal expertise that reduces the cost of external reliance.
  • Direct the execution and maintenance of Tax Amendment Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Service Level Agreements (SLAs), optimizing service cost and delivery time at scale.

Tax Amendment Operations & Risk:

  • Oversee the creation and filing of amended Federal, State, and Local tax returns (including W2Cs and amended 1099s) via Mastertax, and back-file original returns as necessary, managing a high volume of transactions at scale.
  • Direct the research and resolution of complex amended tax return issues with taxing jurisdictions and internal teams, using insight to navigate regulatory challenges.
  • Proactively triage issues to identify systemic trends and engineering intervention needs; recommend and execute process improvements that dramatically reduce the long-term cost of errors.
  • Ensure adherence to compliance by proactively identifying and mitigating potential tax amendment risks, using sophisticated business acumen to quantify exposure at scale.
  • Maintain deep subject matter expertise in R&D, ERTC, and other payroll tax credits as they apply to amended returns, leveraging this insight to identify opportunities for client savings.
  • Develop and implement strategies to optimize the efficiency and accuracy of the tax amendment function, with a clear focus on minimizing operational cost while ensuring quality at scale.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 8+ years of progressive management experience in payroll tax compliance, with at least 3 years at a Senior Manager or Director level.
  • Deep Subject Matter Expertise: Minimum of 5+ years of hands-on experience in complex, multi-jurisdictional payroll tax amendments and reconciliation (Federal, State, and Local).
  • Familiarity with quarterly and year-end filing cycles is a required
  • Product/System Fluency: Proven experience collaborating with Product and Engineering teams to solve operational challenges and drive product-level improvements (e.g., data mapping, system integrations).
  • Required Technical Fluency: Expert proficiency in tax filing software (MasterTax required) and advanced analytical skills (Excel/Sheets) for complex data modeling.
  • Certifications: CPP (Certified Payroll Professional) is strongly preferred.
  • Process-driven while able to be resourceful and adaptable
  • Experience with multi-state accounts for single large employer OR a large multi-employer doing
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex processes clearly

The base wage range for this position based in our New York City Office is targeted at $155,500.00 - $178,825.00.

Actual compensation is based on multiple factors that are unique to each candidate, including and not limited to skill set, level of relevant experience, and specific work location.  Salary ranges for positions based in other locations may differ based on the cost of labor in that location.
