Job Description:

Role Overview

The Senior Manager, Detection Engineering is a senior leader within Threat Defense & Exposure Operations (TDEO), accountable for advancing an intelligence‑led, exposure‑informed detection capability across Fusion Operations. This role leads the end‑to‑end detection lifecycle and partners deeply with Cyber Security Operations (CSOC), Cyber Security Incident Response (CSIRT), Protect Threat Intelligence, Attack Surface Reduction (ASR), and engineering teams to deliver high‑fidelity detections that materially reduce adversary opportunity and business risk.

The role is responsible for maturing detection engineering as a productized, governed capability, including the development of a Detection‑as‑Code platform, lifecycle standards, and analytics‑driven performance management aligned to TDEO outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

Intelligence‑Led Detection Lifecycle Ownership

  • Own the end‑to‑end detection lifecycle across Fusion, from threat‑informed requirements and hypothesis generation through engineering, deployment, tuning, validation, and retirement of detections.
  • Embed “before‑detection” thinking by ensuring detections are driven by adversary behaviors, exposure context, and threat models—not solely by reactive alerting needs.
  • Establish lifecycle standards that ensure detections remain current, effective, and aligned to evolving threats, exposures, and business priorities.

Fusion Partnerships: CSOC, CSIRT, Threat Intelligence, ASR

  • Partner closely with CSOC and CSIRT to co‑develop detections that are operationally actionable, high signal‑to‑noise, and supported by clear triage and response expectations.
  • Incorporate incident learnings, CSOC analyst feedback, and CSIRT post‑incident reviews into continuous detection improvement.
  • Collaborate with Protect Threat Intelligence to translate intelligence requirements, adversary insights, and campaign analysis into concrete detection logic.
  • Align with Attack Surface Reduction (ASR) to ensure detections reinforce exposure reduction priorities and validate control effectiveness.

Detection‑as‑Code & Platform Leadership

  • Lead the design and delivery of a Detection‑as‑Code platform to enable scalable, repeatable, and governed detection development using modern engineering practices.
  • Establish CI/CD‑style workflows for detection content, including version control, testing, promotion, rollback, and auditability.
  • Partner with automation, orchestration, and data engineering teams to integrate detections with enrichment services, validation tooling, and response workflows.

Threat Modeling & Detection Coverage

  • Apply threat modeling to identify detection gaps, prioritize engineering effort, and align coverage to the exposures adversaries are most likely to exploit.
  • Ensure detections are mapped to MITRE ATT&CK to support coverage analysis, gap identification, and executive‑level reporting.
  • Drive consistency in how threat models, ATT&CK techniques, and intelligence requirements are operationalized across Fusion detections.

SIEM & Analytics Leadership

  • Oversee detection development across enterprise SIEM platforms (e.g., Splunk Enterprise Security, Microsoft Sentinel), ensuring consistency, scalability, and performance.
  • Use analytics and metrics (e.g., true positive rate, false positive rate, detection coverage, time‑to‑detect) to drive prioritization, tuning decisions, and investment trade‑offs.
  • Translate detection performance into risk‑based insights that demonstrate how Fusion detections contribute to reduced exposure and faster containment.

People, Strategy & Capability Maturity

  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of detection engineers aligned to TDEO’s intelligence‑led operating model.
  • Set the detection engineering roadmap in alignment with TDEO strategy, Fusion priorities, and enterprise risk outcomes.
  • Contribute to broader TDEO initiatives, including capability maturity assessments, standards development, and platform strategy.

Required Qualifications

  • Prior people leadership experience in a detection engineering, security analytics, or security operations function.
  • 8+ years of experience in cybersecurity, with deep experience in detection engineering, SOC operations, or security analytics.
  • Proven experience developing detections for SIEM platforms such as Splunk Enterprise Security and/or Microsoft Sentinel.
  • Strong understanding of the detection lifecycle and how detections enable effective CSOC and CSIRT operations.
  • Experience translating threat intelligence and threat models into operational detections.
  • Working knowledge of MITRE ATT&CK and its application to detection coverage and gap analysis.
  • Background in analytics and data‑driven decision‑making.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building or leading a Detection‑as‑Code or content‑as‑code platform.
  • Foundational understanding of DevOps concepts, including CI/CD pipelines, version control, and automated testing.
  • Experience operating within a Fusion‑style, cross‑domain security model integrating intelligence, detection, response, and exposure management.
