The Opportunity
British Marine P&I is seeking a Senior Loss Prevention Surveyor to join its London‑based Loss Prevention team. This is a senior technical role, sitting at the centre of survey governance, risk insight, and claims prevention, with a forward‑looking focus on identifying emerging risks and working with underwriting and claims to prevent losses before they occur.
This is not an underwriting role, but a senior technical position with a strong forward‑looking focus. The role carries clear ownership of key processes and functional leadership within Loss Prevention, requiring an experienced professional who can exercise confident technical judgement and help shape the future capability of the function as it continues to develop.
Having the right to work in the UK is a requirement for this role. QBE may consider sponsorship at its discretion.
About QBE
At QBE, we get to the heart of what matters for our customers. And we do it all with a human touch.
We’re an international insurer with more than 13,000 people working across 26 countries – which means we’re big enough for your ambitions, yet small enough for you to make a real impact. It’s an exciting time. We’re building momentum towards our vision to become the most consistent and innovative risk partner.
What if you could have a positive impact – at work and in the world? As part of the QBE team, you’ll get to spend every day working with people who are passionate, talented and kind.
Your new role
You will act as a senior technical authority for loss prevention surveys, reviewing third‑party survey reports, assessing quality, identifying material risks, and ensuring findings are properly escalated to underwriters where required. You will work closely with underwriting and claims teams, providing forward‑looking risk insight while maintaining a clear separation between technical advice and underwriting decision‑making.
The role has a strong emphasis on attention to detail, governance, and professional judgement, alongside a proactive mindset focused on continuous improvement. Over time, there will be opportunities to contribute to publications, presentations, and occasional vessel attendance.
Review and assess loss prevention survey reports, evidence, and hazard close‑outs, ensuring quality, consistency, and defensibility
Act as a technical escalation point where surveys are incomplete, unclear, or highlight material risk requiring underwriting awareness
Provide technical advice to underwriters and claims teams on vessel condition, operational risk, and loss causation
Identify trends and emerging risks by linking survey findings with claims experience and operational insight
Support surveyor governance, including quality assessment and feedback on third‑party surveyors
Maintain accurate records and decisions within Loss Prevention systems and governance frameworks
Contribute to the development of loss prevention guidance, articles, and technical briefings
Support the evolution of Loss Prevention towards a more proactive, insight‑led risk function
About you
Senior P&I experience is essential, gained within a P&I club or similar environment
A Master Mariner certificate, senior deck officer background (Chief Officer/Captain), or equivalent seagoing experience is strongly preferred
Alternatively, strong marine survey or naval architecture experience combined with proven P&I exposure
Practical understanding of third‑party claims, including pollution and liability risks, and the inherent grey areas of P&I
Proven experience reviewing surveys and exercising sound, evidence‑based technical judgement
Highly detail‑focused, with the confidence to challenge poor‑quality surveys and escalate issues appropriately
Proactive mindset with a genuine interest in prevention, improvement, and forward‑looking risk insight
Strong stakeholder engagement skills, able to work effectively with underwriters, claims teams, and surveyors
