Job Description - Senior Instrumentation & Control (I&C) Engineer

Title: Senior Instrumentation & Control Engineer

Job Purpose

  • Provide technical leadership for I&C design during FEED and detailed engineering phases in oil & gas projects.
  • Define I&C design basis, standards, and deliverables to ensure safe, reliable, and cost-effective solutions.
  • Oversee integration with process, electrical, and multi-discipline interfaces; ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Mentor engineers, drive quality and schedule adherence, and ensure robust instrumentation & control deliverables across the project phases.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the I&C engineering design and implementation through various phases of the project, ensuring compliance with project requirements, industry standards, and best practices.
  • Participate in site visit for data collection, validation and prepare site visit report.
  • Develop and maintain I&C engineering documents such as instrument datasheets, index, IO schedule, Control narrative, Safety requirement specification, RFQ, TBE, Site survey SOW, Control system modification SOW. Provide input and review drawings such as wiring diagrams, loop diagram, installation details, Location layout drawings, Instrument hook up, Control room layout drawing, level sketch diagram,
  • Coordinate and participate in OEM control system adequacy survey, review and approve the OEM adequacy study report.
  • Perform and review sizing calculations for control valve, flow element, thermowell and relief valve as applicable.
  • Specify and procure I&C, and related equipment and liaise with Vendors post award to ensure successful supply of Vendor design documentation and equipment according to contractual requirements inc. technical review of Vendor engineering and design deliverables.
  • Coordinate with other disciplines such as process, mechanical, piping, and electrical to ensure an integrated design approach and advocate for an integrated team approach to projects.
  • Participate in safety studies such as HAZID, HAZOP, SIL and implement the study recommendations in the relevant design deliverables.
  • Participate in control system study workshop such as CHAZOP, Alarm management and Cybersecurity.
  • Participate in design reviews such as process, plot plan, 3D model and Constructability.
  • Liaise with Client and Vendors to ensure the design specifications are met and to resolve any technical issues that may arise.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to junior I&C engineers and designers on the team.
  • Prepare and manage the I&C engineering budget and schedule, ensuring that project milestones are met.
  • Ensure compliance with international and regional standards like IEC, API, ISA, IEEE, NFPA, and oil & gas specific I&C codes.
  • Monitor quality assurance and control of I&C installations, ensuring operational reliability and safety.
  • Ensure QA/QC practices, drawing standards, datasheets, calibration plans, and requisition packages.
  • Support field construction, commissioning, start-up activities, and as-built documentation.
  • Stay current with advances in I&C technologies and recommend value engineering solutions.

Experience

  • Experience: 12+ years of experience, including at least 8 years of I&C design engineering work experience within the oil & gas sector, particularly onshore and offshore projects in the middle east.
  • ADNOC EPC/PMC experience is an added advantage.
  • Demonstrated track record delivering I&C design and integration on FEED/detailed engineering projects.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Instrumentation or Electronics & Communication Engineering
  • Certification related to I&C and functional safety (e.g., ISA, IEC, TUV, EXIDA) is advantageous.

Technical Skills

  • Strong background knowledge in the design of I&C systems and Safety Instrumented System (SIS).
  • Hazardous Areas: equipment selection & certification (IECEx/ATEX), installation practices for different Zones.
  • Standards Familiarity: API, IEC, ISA, ISO, IEEE, NFPA, NACE, BS EN; operator standards (e.g., ADNOC/others as applicable).
  • Strong knowledge in DCS, ESD, FGS, PLC/RTU, SCADA, and field instrumentation design.
  • Familiarity with FEED/detailed engineering deliverables, MOC/Change control, and document controls.
  • Proficiency and ability to perform tasks in I&C software tools and applications such as AVEVA, SPI, INSTRUCALC etc.
  • Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and decision-making abilities.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership abilities.
