About you and this role:

Dow has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Indigenous Relations Manager located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

The ideal candidate will have a working knowledge of industry and experience working across Indigenous communities and regulatory agencies in Canada. In this role, you will work with a diverse team located in Alberta to engage Indigenous communities and provide guidance on policy development in Canada and other geographies where Dow operates. We are seeking someone with a passion to work with Indigenous communities and energy to continue advancing Dow’s ambition to building positive and impactful relationships with the Indigenous communities where Dow operates.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership and strategic direction on Indigenous consultation and engagement for the Path2Zero project in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. 
  • Implement the guiding principles under Dow Canada’s Indigenous Inclusion Policy.  
  • Track and manage commitments made under agreements with Indigenous groups.  
  • Engage with Indigenous groups to understand the various perspectives, economic and development goals and drivers and share those with our project and leadership teams as part of decision-making processes.  
  • Develop relationships through meaningful engagement to set the foundations for long and trusting relationships with local Indigenous communities, government, regulators and other industry professionals.  
  • Develop strategic priorities that consolidates input from and mirrors the needs of Indigenous communities. 
  • Coordinate and facilitate meetings between Indigenous communities/organizations and Dow representatives, as required. 
  • Liaison with project teams to ensure that proper Indigenous and community engagement is being completed and documented. 
  • Monitor the status of the health of our Indigenous relationships and respond proactively to address concerns. Liaison with Operations and other internal groups to ensure that Indigenous partnerships and strategies are aligned and understood, and communication channels are maintained. 
  • Drive alignment with regards to Indigenous relations for internal Dow groups including Geographical, Site, Public Affairs, Indigenous Employee Network, P2Z Program, etc.
  • Liaison with Procurement to ensure effective collaboration with Indigenous businesses.  Monitor progress and be a champion for growth of Indigenous business participation at Dow’s Alberta sites. 
  • Liaison with Dow P2Z project team and human resources to attract Indigenous persons to our business. 
  • Monitor the external landscape for trends, issues and legislative and legal developments that could impact Dow and/or the petrochemical industry in Alberta. 
  • Promote Indigenous cultural awareness within Dow.

Qualifications:  

  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. Legal/Regulatory, Political Science, Human Resources/Labor Relations, etc.).
  • At least 10 years of experience working with Indigenous communities with understanding of the related cultural diversity and community impact. In lieu of a degree, 15 years of relevant experience may be considered.
  • A minimum requirement for this position is the ability to work legally in Canada. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including any type of permanent residency support.

  • Relationship Building: Established, trusting relationships with a wide network of national, provincial, and territorial organizations, regulators, industry counterparts, and Indigenous communities.
  • Inclusive Leadership: Innovative and inclusive leader who promotes diversity and fosters a culture of inclusion and excellence.
  • Consultation Expertise: Proven success in managing Indigenous consultation for major projects, with knowledge of regulatory environments, sensitive issues, and risk management.
  • Strategic Communication: Experienced in managing and communicating complex situations to earn trust from external partners and stakeholders.
  • Political Acumen: Demonstrated sound judgment and ability to navigate sensitive issues with discretion.
  • Industry Networking: Strong personal network within the industry and aptitude for forming new, positive relationships.
  • Communication: Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills with strong interpersonal abilities.
  • Credibility and Influence: Ability to leverage experience to build immediate credibility with project and leadership teams.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Proven ability to navigate and collaborate across business units and functions.
  • Strategic Problem-Solving: Creative approach to strategy, tact, and problem-solving.
  • Client Engagement: Ability to work effectively with a wide range of internal and external clients and interests.
  • Conflict Resolution: Well-developed skills to engage in difficult conversations, influence outcomes, and maintain strong, trusting relationships.
