SUMMARY/JOB PURPOSE (Basic purpose of the job):

The R&D Senior Finance Manager supports all financial forecast and management reporting for the development organization and its clinical trials. This position will lead business partnering efforts with the heads of critical functions, such as clinical operations, regulatory affairs, and drug safety. Within each of those functions, the R&D Senior Finance Manager is responsible for developing and tracking detailed forecasts across all relevant GL accounts. Additionally, this position will own the FP&A forecast for several pivotal phase 3 clinical trials, partnering with study delivery leads and the sourcing department to integrate the impact of study updates and CRO estimates on our clinical trial projections. The R&D Senior Finance Manager will also collaborate with Accounting to review accruals and to develop variance commentary and analysis each close cycle.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Partner with VP/SVP leaders in the development organization to formulate financial forecasts for their cost centers.
  • Develop clinical trial forecasts in collaboration with study delivery leads and sourcing/procurement leads.
  • Provide highly responsive service to the development org for all financial inquiries– field/triage issues on budget changes, headcount requests, invoices, purchase orders, etc.
  • Produce monthly management reports to cost center managers, providing insightful variance analysis and commentary.
  • Track consultant/temp headcount utilization and spending.
  • Develop R&D forecast and actuals reporting slides.
  • Review accruals on consultant and outside service contracts, ensuring that actuals align with forecasted expectations.
  • Develop variance analysis and commentary as part of monthly financial close process.
  • Assist in process improvements and system implementations as needed.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • No supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

Education:

  • BS/BA degree in related discipline and 9 years of related experience; or,
  • MS/MBA/MA degree in related discipline and 7 years of related experience; or,
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience:

  • Prior ownership of financial forecasts (e.g., of cost centers, revenue lines, balance sheet accounts, or other financial metrics/elements)
  • Minimum of 3 years of Public Biotech/Pharmaceutical experience
  • Experience with financial planning systems required (e.g., Oracle EPBCS, Hyperion, Netsuite, or similar)
  • Minimum of five years in business-partner-facing finance role
  • Demonstrated growth in responsibility in FP&A, corporate finance, accounting, or similar finance function

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Deep understanding of financial forecasting processes, best practices, inter-dependencies, and stakeholder management
  • Strong understanding of clinical development lifecycles, including key drivers of costs and potential variances
  • Strong leadership, communication, and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to combine detailed-level analytical thinking with strategic mindset
  • Strong communication (verbal and written) and presentation skills
  • Ability to build strong cross functional relationships within an organization
  • Team player with the ability to work independently, proactively, and effectively under pressure
  • Broad business acumen and sound business judgment
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel & intermediate knowledge of PowerPoint

Work Environment/Physical Demands:

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several U.S. geographic markets, and we pay differently based on those defined markets. The base pay range for this position is $152,000 - $215,000 annually. The base pay range may take into account the candidate’s geographic region, which will adjust the pay depending on the specific work location. The base pay offered will take into account the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, experience and internal equity, among other factors.
