Job Overview & Purpose
Cochlear develops products, systems, and tools incorporating electromechanical hardware and software components. The Systems Verification and Validation (V&V) team works to protect the experience and trust that customers have in Cochlear, with a final, independent evaluation of these products and systems.

The Senior Verification and Validation Engineer is responsible for defining and leading high quality, comprehensive and user-centric V&V test methods, coverage and evidence to demonstrate that the products, systems and V&V tools meet intended specifications and customer needs within a complex domain or project.

This role is also responsible for ensuring that their own and their team’s V&V outputs are delivered to project timelines, identifying and driving continuous improvements in testing and processes to maximise efficiency.

The Senior Verification and Validation Engineer uses multidisciplinary approaches and collaboration with other V&V engineers, design engineers, project management and quality engineers to ensure high-quality product and system releases to Cochlear’s customers.

 


Key Accountabilities
1. System and Product Design Verification and Validation (V&V)
Enable the release of high-quality systems and products, with electromechanical hardware and software components, by defining and leading design verification and validation activities and processes to ensure that intended specifications and customer needs are met.

  • Ensure, through cross-functional collaboration and review, that design inputs (including needs, requirements) are verifiable and validatable.

  • Define comprehensive, technically sound, and efficient test coverage. Produce and maintain V&V plan documents for complex or unprecedented projects.

  • Develop, improve and maintain test methods, test cases and protocols of high quality (scientific, robust and scalable) for complex or unprecedented designs

  • Execute, and coordinate execution of, automated and manual tests according to plans, and using a range of advanced test methods and equipment.

  • Produce test artifacts (including test results, other objective evidence) and reports of high quality (accurate and comprehensive).

  • Troubleshoot issues encountered in testing, and debug test issues (including method, setup, equipment, script issues).

  • Serve as subject matter expert in a complex domain or project able to communicate with technical and non-technical audiences, meaningfully and concisely.

  • Produce and maintain high quality documentation of V&V deliverables, under change control, to comply with Quality Management System (QMS).

  • Provide peer review and approval of V&V documents.

2. Project Delivery and Communication

  • Define and lead delivery of required V&V tasks to meet project timeline and other stakeholder requirements.

  • Communicate V&V delivery status and risks to project stakeholders, actionably and concisely.

  • Contribute V&V needs (including skills, equipment and resourcing) and provide inputs to project plans, and suggest risk mitigation strategies to protect quality and schedule.

  • Initiate escalation to project management and resource managers to propose risk mitigation strategies where required to protect schedule and resolve issues.

3. V&V Processes and Tools

  • Introduce, maintain and continuously improve tools used in V&V.

  • Contribute to, maintain and continuously improve V&V test automation.

  • Establish, manage and maintain inventory required for V&V delivery.

  • Follow V&V processes and QMS procedures. Identify and drive continuous improvements of V&V processes to increase V&V output quality and efficiency in at least one complex domain or project, while ensuring compliance with regulatory, standard and business requirements.

4. Team Leadership

  • Share and seek knowledge, ideas and experiences with V&V and project teams.

  • Collaborate and negotiate and influence cross-functionally (including with other V&V engineers, design engineers and project managers) to achieve the best customer and business outcomes.

  • Train, mentor and supervise V&V team members to ensure that objectives of the V&V team and the V&V requirements of Cochlear are met.

  • Follow relevant quality procedures to deliver quality products and services and identify and support the implementation of continuous improvement. Undertake additional quality responsibilities (e.g., audit) when appropriately trained to undertake these responsibilities.

  • Contribute ideas on systems and process methods to improve deliverables.

  • Work safely, complying with all safety procedures, rules, and instructions; and reporting workplace hazards, incidents, or injuries to manager.


Key Incumbent Requirements:

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a commercial R&D environment delivering consumer‑facing systems or products, or involvement in at least one full product lifecycle from concept to release.

  • Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant Engineering or Science discipline (e.g., Electrical, Electronics, Mechatronics Engineering).

  • Clear verbal and presentation‑based technical communication including excellent English proficiency.

  • (Desired) Leading design verification and validation activities.

  • (Desired) Experience in Agile or Scrum‑based development environment.

  • (Desired) Experience working under regulated environments and international standards (e.g., medical device regulations).

  • (Desired) Application of design principles (e.g., systems engineering, requirements management).

  • (Desired) Research and analytical skills, including experimentation and critical analysis.

  • (Desired) Complex system problem solving using systems thinking, systematic approaches and cross‑functional inputs.

  • (Desired) Task definition and allocation across teams with varied experience levels and availability.

  • (Desired) Stakeholder management and negotiation.

  • (Desired) Proficiency in broad range of test methods and equipment (e.g., bench and usability testing).

  • (Desired) Project risk management within medium‑ to large‑scale projects.

  • (Desired) Identification of corner and edge cases.

  • (Desired) Application of control and automation principles (e.g., state‑based programming, PLCs, robotics).


Required Skills:

  • Strong attention to detail.

  • Data collection and data or statistical analysis.

  • Formal documentation (e.g., reports, spreadsheets).

  • Application of scientific approaches (e.g., hypothesis testing).

  • Programming or scripting language (e.g., Python, C++) with debugging capability.

  • Clear, concise, and accurate written and visual technical communication.

  • Problem solving and troubleshooting, particularly for electromechanical hardware‑software systems.

  • Proficient and safe use of test and measurement instrumentation (e.g., digital oscilloscopes, multimeters, sensors and measuring tools).
