The Senior Engineer, Electrical Design is responsible for designing, developing, and implementing optimized electrical solutions for pharmaceutical automated manufacturing equipment built internally by Baxter Global Automation. Working within a global organization with engineering teams based in both the United States and Switzerland, this role supports the design and delivery of advanced equipment deployed across Baxter manufacturing sites worldwide. These systems enable the production of a wide range of Baxter pharmaceutical products that help save and sustain the lives of patients around the globe.

What you'll be doing

  • Lead the electrical design for custom automation equipment, collaborating with a cross‑functional team to ensure successful system development, fabrication, assembly, and functionality.
  • Work with design engineering, technicians, plant personnel, and external vendors to support equipment design, component integration, and problem resolution during development and manufacturing.
  • Develop and maintain electrical documentation, including new and modified electrical drawings, bills of materials, and integration of purchased components in accordance with industry standards.
  • Provide technical support and continuous improvement of electrical systems, cabling, and testing equipment, ensuring reliable and optimized machine performance.
  • Support safety and compliance activities, including machine risk assessments, preparation of required documentation, and execution of Machine Safety checks; ensure all designs adhere to NEC, UL, and other applicable codes and regulations.
  • Assist during debugging, commissioning, and validation of automation equipment, contributing to process optimization and readiness for deployment.
  • Contribute to project cost estimating and scheduling, and support Project Managers by providing technical feedback to help maintain timelines and approved budgets.
  • Provide indirect supervision and technical guidance, including requisitioning components, documenting designs, and participating in training activities; up to 20% travel may be required domestically and internationally.

What you'll bring

  • BS in Electrical or Automation Engineering with minimum 3 years of relevant experience in electrical or controls design.
  • Experience working in or supporting a dynamic manufacturing environment, preferably in the healthcare or pharmaceutical automation sector.
  • Hands‑on experience in electrical, controls, and pneumatic system design for modern automated manufacturing equipment.
  • Proficiency with electrical design software, preferably Eplan, SolidWorks Electrical, or Spac.
  • Demonstrated ability to create detailed and compliant electrical drawing documentation using ISO and ANSI standards.
  • Familiarity with machine safety norms and standards, such as ISO 12100, ISO 13849, and IEC 62061.
  • Strong knowledge of core engineering principles, with emphasis on electrical and controls engineering for automated manufacturing equipment.
  • Ability to develop detailed, industry‑compliant electrical drawings and interpret technical documentation, including schematics, manuals, and component specifications.
  • Skilled in analyzing electrical and pneumatic system designs to identify improvements, innovations, and cost‑reduction opportunities.
  • Basic understanding of PLC architectures, HMI/SCADA systems, and industrial communication networks, such as Ethernet/IP, Profinet, and Modbus TCP.
  • Effective collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to contribute successfully within a larger cross‑functional design team.
  • Hands‑on, shop‑floor‑oriented problem‑solving approach, supporting practical debugging and design refinement.
  • Strong English communication skills; basic Italian is a plus for coordination with the Swiss site.

We understand compensation is an important factor as you consider the next step in your career. At Baxter, we are committed to equitable pay for all employees, and we strive to be more transparent with our pay practices. The estimated base salary for this position is $96,000 - $132,000 annually. The estimated range is meant to reflect an anticipated salary range for the position. We may pay more or less than of the anticipated range based upon market data and other factors, all of which are subject to change. Individual pay is based upon location, skills and expertise, experience, and other relevant factors. This position may also be eligible for discretionary bonuses.
