Senior Directorate Financial Manager

Argonne's Financial Management and Procurement Services organization (FMPS) is seeking a Sr. Financial Manager to oversee the financial functions for the Physical Sciences and Engineering directorate (PSE).

The Sr. Directorate Financial Manager functions as a key member of the team and is responsible for providing leadership and direction regarding all directorate financial matters including the development, analysis and evaluation of financial metrics and measurements, rate and cost variance analysis, budgeting, forecasting, trend analysis, labor charge monitoring, financial resource management, investment risk analysis, strategic planning, and support to the annual budgeting process. 

Key responsibilities:

  • Serves as the key liaison to ensure the directorate’s financial policies, procedures and goals align with the laboratory’s financial policies, procedures and goals.
  • Responsible for effective execution of short and long-term financial and managerial reporting; develops long-range forecasts and maintains related financial plans.
  • Collaborates with Directorate management team on the development and integration of organizational strategies, policies and practices as they relate to all financial matters.  
  • Responsible for oversight of 6 staff members performing related functions.
  • Effectively provides direction on the development and implementation of related financial and budget programs and/or workflow process to meet business needs.
  • Leaders at Argonne are expected to demonstrate a high level of competency, including strategic agility, team building, clear communication, trust-building, and accountability.

The successful candidate will also:

  • Work onsite 3+ days per week in Lemont, Illinois.
  • Communicate a clear understanding of financial principles and practices.
  • Proactively seek opportunities for improving business operations.
  • Present executive management with meaningful business information.
  • Ensure compliance with corporate financial policy through internal controls and assessments.
  • Provide clear direction to direct reports and staff to enable customer-focused services, business efficiencies, and high-quality business products.
  • Actively manage directorate financial staff by leading the recruiting, selecting, orienting, training, development, and mentoring of the team.

Position Requirements

  • PAL2: Minimum experience of a Bachelor's degree (Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, or related field) and 10+ years of experience, or a Masters degree and 6+ years of experience, or equivalent. Masters degree preferred.
  • US citizenship: To perform the essential functions of this position successful applicants must provide proof of U.S. citizenship, which is required to comply with federal regulations and contract.
  • Demonstrated experience and ability as a leader of a team of professionals.
  • Ability to independently carry out delegated authority with minimum instruction, including skill in judgement, discretion and decision making.
  • Skill in budget development; financial, variance, and trend analysis; and performance management to support objectives and plans.
  • Budget preparation with established schedules; collecting, analyzing, and consolidating financial data; recommending plans.
  • Experience with applying change management process and tools to create a strategy to support adoption of the changes required to meet organizational needs.
  • Knowledge of organizational effectiveness and operations management concepts and the ability to implement best practices.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities and to comprehend, analyze, develop, and implement solutions to complex problems.
  • Experience with large financial systems such as Workday.
  • Effective relationship building skills and communication skills in order to convey financial information to a broad audience.
  • Experience in Federal Government regulatory compliance and audit support, preferred.

The expected hiring range for this position is $133,500.00 - $208,260.00.
