Senior Counsel - Fixed Term (12 months)
Overview
Mastercard Payment Services delivers account-to-account payment services and infrastructure in four markets. Our main markets are Norway and Denmark, with eFaktura and Avtalegiro in Norway and Betalingsservice in Denmark as examples of key brands in the portfolio. We also deliver real-time payments in two markets in central Europe.
We are searching for an experienced commercial lawyer to support Mastercard Payments Services’ Danish business, which runs not only the national clearing systems but also a variety of payment services used by most individuals.
This role requires strong commercial knowledge and experience in the technology and financial/payment services space. This role will act as an advisor to Product, Technology and Sales clients to enable the delivery of the commercial objectives and strategy of the supported business unit. As Senior Counsel, you will be a member of the Legal team. Day-to-day work will be contract drafting and negotiation, product development, understanding regulatory and compliance, and risk analysis.
Role
The role requires the provision of high-quality advice to the assigned business units on a broad range of commercial and contractual matters and the ability to identify relevant issues and help the business effectively navigate legal risks and implement appropriate controls, policies and processes.
• Focusing on legal support for the strategic development and daily operations of Mastercard’s global products and services, reporting into the Senior Managing Counsel who is responsible for leading this legal support. There may also be opportunities to be involved in other aspects of the L&P work
• Developing strong relationships with product development, business, sales, finance and senior management within the business
• Advising from the creation through development to the launch stage and beyond of various solutions and services, covering a broad range of commercial and contractual matters, including product and marketing legal review, non-disclosure agreements and bid process support
• Facilitating thoughtful risk-taking to enable the business units to deliver on strategy.
• Drafting and review contracts and manage complex contract negotiations with customers, partners and key suppliers
• Ensuring alignment and compliance of business's products and services with Mastercard’s policies, procedures and processes and with global regulatory and commercial laws
• Working in close collaboration with external and internal specialists (including Franchise and regulatory, data privacy and intellectual property counsel))
• Providing training as appropriate to L&P colleagues, sales and product teams
• Instructing and manage external counsel within agreed policy and budget
All about You
• A qualified lawyer with a solid academic and training background
• Fluent in Danish (Norwegian is a plus)
• Licensed to practice law in Denmark
• An interest in the financial services industry and both existing and emerging payment technologies
• Exposure to a broad range of commercial and technology law issues.
• Strong communication skills with team members, clients and colleagues.
• Experience across a range of commercial contracts and the ability to analyze and identify the core legal issues.
• A working knowledge of data privacy and intellectual property issues.
• A fast learner who can gain rapid familiarity with complex products, solutions and legal frameworks and maintain knowledge of those changing products, solutions and legal frameworks.
• Solutions orientated with excellent time management, planning and organizational skills
• Able to work flexibly under pressure and with tight deadlines.
• Strong drafting, writing, oral communication and negotiating skills
• Exceptional interpersonal skills with proven experience in relationship building and partnering.
• Must work well in both team and individual settings
• Strong business acumen
• Previous experience working as in-house lawyer, preferably at a multinational company, desirable but not essential
The role is a 12 month fixed term maternity cover
