Why This Role Matters

As a Senior Consultant, Fisheries Biologist, you will be an integral member of ERM’s Biodiversity and Ecosystems team. You’ll collaborate with toxicologists, hydrologists, geochemists, aquatic scientists, wildlife biologists, and a global network of environmental and social experts. Your work will support aquatic environmental assessments, permitting, biodiversity initiatives, and large‑scale capital projects across Canada.

You’ll also have the chance to travel to beautiful, remote locations, partner with major clients, and contribute directly to ERM’s global environmental strategy.

What Your Impact Is

  • Lead and execute fish and fish habitat field programs in freshwater environments throughout Canada.

  • Support the design, development, and monitoring of fisheries offsetting and compensation programs.

  • Analyze and interpret fish habitat, community, and biology data, including database management contributions.

  • Prepare high‑quality technical deliverables such as baseline studies, permitting documents, monitoring reports, offsetting plans, compliance reports, and impact assessments.

  • Collaborate with ERM’s international aquatics and fisheries technical communities.

  • Help advance ERM’s global strategy through impactful environmental project delivery.

What You’ll Bring

Required

  • B.Sc. or M.Sc. in Fisheries Biology or a related discipline.

  • Registered Professional Biologist (or equivalent), or eligible to apply.

  • 3+ years of experience, including freshwater fieldwork such as fish and fish habitat assessments, fish sampling on lakes and rivers, water quality sampling, and aquatic biology.

  • Strong data management and QA/QC capabilities.

  • Advanced written and oral communication skills, including technical report writing and preparing publications and permit applications.

  • Knowledge of Federal, Provincial, and Territorial regulations relevant to mining and oil & gas.

  • Ability to meet deadlines in a dynamic environment, multitask, work independently, remain flexible, and travel.

  • Commitment to safety and established Health & Safety procedures.

  • Excellent problem‑solving abilities.

  • Driver's License Required: This position requires a valid driver's license and/or the ability to operate a company vehicle due to the nature of job duties, which include frequent travel to various client locations across a large geographical area.  

  • Pleasure Craft Operator’s License.

  • This position is not eligible for immigration sponsorship.

Preferred

  • Experience with hydroacoustic or bathymetric assessment, fish tagging, telemetry, or fish habitat offsetting.

  • Certifications such as Electrofishing, Occupational First Aid, Transportation Endorsement, ATV/snowmobile safety, and Swiftwater Rescue Training.

  • A positive, collaborative, self‑driven approach and enthusiasm for contributing to ERM’s global mission.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute fish and fish habitat field programs across Canada.

  • Support fisheries offsetting and compensation program development and monitoring.

  • Compile, manage, analyze, and interpret aquatic datasets, including database contributions.

  • Develop technical report content, including:

    • Baseline environmental studies

    • Environmental monitoring reports

    • Permitting and compliance documents

    • Offsetting plans

    • Environmental impact assessments

  • Participate actively in ERM’s global aquatics and fisheries technical communities.

For the Senior Consultant, Fisheries Biologist position, the anticipated annual base pay is $76,819–$98,928 (CAD). Actual pay will depend on factors such as education, experience, skills, location, performance, and business needs. In some cases, pay may fall outside this range. This role may be eligible for bonus pay (casual and fixed term/flex force employees are not bonus eligible).
