What you’ll be doing

As a Sr. Consultant, Design, you will partner with Workstream leads and project team members, to support design activities including the development of quality control and design review, site reviews, objectives, success criteria, standards, benefits management approach, scope, requirements, outlining costs, timelines and other related project tasks. 

You will ensure that our workplace and retail strategies and design solutions are reflected in our projects, execute on activities to meet milestone dates, coordinate with other work streams to provide design support, coordinate and manage vendors and consultants on deliverables, and develop processes and communications that optimize project delivery and implementation. 

The Sr. Consultant will develop and create a consistent, scalable, identifiable, safe and healthy workplace aligned to our workplace and retail strategies.  In addition, this role will support the integration of workplace and retail related disciplines, technologies, and other components that may enhance the creation of effective and innovative environments as well as help to effectively communicate our standards.  You will analyze consultant reports and construction documentation to ensure requirements are reflected and integrated into plans, and will develop processes and communications that support effective and efficient delivery of our design strategies across all stakeholders and partners.

NOTE:  This is a temporary, 12-month, opportunity.

How you’ll succeed

  • ANALYSIS AND RECOMMENDATIONS - Analyzing, compiling, and recommending best practices, trends, approaches, industry standards on workplace and retail design.  Supporting design changes from concept to implementation to ensure smooth transition to new designs and strategies. Supporting the development, analysis, and communications of workplace and retail strategies and design solutions to stakeholders including relationship managers, project managers, suppliers, and external vendors.  Developing visual communications  to illustrate complex ideas, innovations, strategies, analysis, and recommendations to meet our workplace and client experience.    
  • BUSINESS PARTNERING - Communicating workplace strategies and design solutions to stakeholders, including relationship managers, project managers, suppliers, and external vendors and providing support to internal partners. This includes consultation and being a subject matter expert as it relates to the design and construction industry, trends, benchmarks and envisioning the future of workplace and retail design. Facilitating meetings, work sessions, focus groups, to educate as part of design development and project coordination.
  • DESIGN QUALITY ASSURANCE - Provide design drawing reviews, contract document reviews, and other quality control reviews and support to ensure strategies, and design solutions are realized as intended. Reviewing technical drawing packages to ensure our strategies and standards have been followed, including directing design partners and other stakeholders on applications that uphold our brand and experience strategies. Reviewing and proposing design solutions to ensure that project constraints are addressed and design solutions are optimized as required.
  • DESIGN SUBJECT MATTER EXPERTISE - SME to other CIBC areas in reviewing the application design strategies and standards.  Support projects through technical reviews for workplace and retail strategies and design solutions.  Participate in various projects to represent subject matter expertise to support the development and implementation of initiatives that relate to enhancing the workplace experience.  Develop and create a framework to support the design team in directing and guiding scalability of design into various types of conditions.  Working knowledge of multiple furniture systems and furniture vendors.  Identify areas of improvement and make recommendations to make the workplace and retail design more effective.
  • Engaging in continuous learning in order to remain current on changing processes and technologies Maintain "currency" in professional and specialized knowledge sufficient to provide value-added consulting to clients on an ongoing basis, including the maintenance of Relevant subject/functional area, industry and organizational knowledge (e.g. relevant practices, principles and technologies), Professional contacts, external network of professionals in similar or related roles.  Works closely with external vendors, consultants, and contractors in or related to the design and construction industry or supporting the improvement of the discipline.

Who you are

  • You have a Bachelors or equivalent degree in Architecture, Interior Design, or related field.
  • 8+ years of working experience as an Interior Designer, Architect, or comparable role
  • 7+ years in retail and/or workplace design consultation or similar field
  • Computer skills including computer-aided design (ACAD), Adobe Creative Suite esp. InDesign, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint), Bluebeam
  • Excellent communication skills (written, visual, and verbal)

  • Solid technical drawing and strong presentation-creation skills
  • Good working knowledge of building codes, industry practices, and interior design products
  • Spatial awareness and ability to visualize three-dimensional objects from two-dimensional drawings
  • Artistic and graphic abilities
  • A keen eye for detail and accuracy
  • Ability to work, liaise and negotiate with other people and ability to communicate and work with engineers, architects, tradespersons, and clients
  • Good time management skills and the ability to meet strict deadlines and work under pressure
  • Knowledge of Organization: Knowledge of organization's vision, structure, culture, philosophy, operating principles, values, and code of ethics.
  • Knowledge of Workplace Strategy and Performance: Knowledge of organization's workplace strategy and the ability to apply them to the work role is accountable for.
  • Operational Functions: Knowledge of major functional processes and associated operating requirements. Uses knowledge of organization's functions to achieve goals, meet commitments.
  • Risk Management: Knowledge of process, tools and techniques for assessing and controlling an organization's exposure to risks of various kinds. Relates risk assessment models and analysis tools and processes to own business.
  • Problem Solving: Knowledge of approaches, tools, techniques for recognizing, anticipating and resolving organizational, operational or process problems.
  • Relationship Management: Ability to establish and build healthy working relations and partnerships with clients, vendors, and peers. Participates in negotiating the terms of the business relationship.
  • Process Management: Ability to understand, monitor, update, or enhance existing business or work process.
  • Consulting: Knowledge of approaches, tools, techniques and roles and responsibilities in providing technical or business guidance to clients.
