About this opportunity:

The Business Development Engineer plays a key role in identifying, evaluating, and advancing high value opportunities across a Canadian thermal and conventional heavy oil portfolio, with a strong focus on SAGD and long-life upstream assets.

The role combines upstream engineering, asset evaluation, and commercial analysis to support portfolio optimization and value creation. Key areas of focus include M&A, competitive intelligence, regulatory changes, and commercial initiatives that influence asset value and long-term competitiveness.

Success in this role requires strong engineering judgment, solid commercial understanding, and credibility with technical teams working across SAGD and heavy oil operations.

What you’ll do:

  • Perform integrated technical and financial evaluations of organic and inorganic opportunities, including acquisitions, divestitures, and commercial alternatives.

  • Quantify value, risk, and uncertainty for upstream assets, incorporating reservoir performance, development concepts, operating strategy, capital efficiency, and regulatory drivers.

  • Translate complex analysis into clear decision ready recommendations for senior leadership.

  • Support market intelligence and competitor benchmarking initiatives within the WCSB.

  • Generate and review economic models and evaluation outputs using industry standard tools to enable consistent, data driven decision making.

  • Utilize broad technical and commercial understanding and passion for connecting people to facilitate cross functional alignment, enhance project value, and accelerate opportunity development.

  • Manage multiple competing priorities independently while delivering results in a fast-paced environment.

  • Promote ideas, articulate business cases, and tailor messaging to diverse audiences, including technical teams, leadership, partners and regulators.

Who you are:

Our ideal candidate will have the following minimum requirements:

  • Legally authorized to work in Canada.

  • 8+ years of experience in upstream SAGD development engineering, including managing and coordinating project teams.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Commerce, Engineering or a related field; professional engineering designation (P.Eng.) or equivalent preferred.

  • Strong business, commercial, and financial acumen.

  • Strategic thinker with the proven ability to transform ideas into actionable work plans for teams.

  • Advanced proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint, Power BI, and Microsoft 365, with experience using Mosaic, ValNav, ARIES, Enersight (or equivalents) for economic evaluation, plus familiarity with market intelligence platforms such as Wood Mackenzie, Rystad, Enverus, and IHS.

  • Working knowledge of technical data tools including Spotfire, GIS, and reservoir model outputs to support commercial and strategic analysis.

We acknowledge the value of transferrable skills and may consider equivalent combinations of experience and education should you not meet a specific requirement.

Note: The application deadline for this position is 11:59 PM MT April 29, 2026.
