The Hill, a division of Nexstar Media Group, is hiring a Senate reporter to join our team covering Congress in Washington, D.C.
The position will be focused on covering the day-to-day and hour-to-hour workings of the Senate, as well as larger themes of politics and policymaking at an exciting and critical moment.
About the role:
The person who fills this position will be responsible for a mix of spot news and regular features. They will cover Senate votes, other action on the Senate floor, negotiations over legislation, interparty and intraparty fights, and more.
It is a fast-paced role that requires a reporter who can work independently and as part of the larger congressional team. Late-night and weekend work will sometimes be required.
We’re looking for someone who can recognize and quickly jump on breaking news and be the first to think of interesting and unique angles that grab readers’ attention. The role requires the ability to juggle news of the day with larger enterprise stories on the next big Senate fights, while recognizing the broader themes shaping the chamber's internal politics. The ability to write in a compelling and informative way while breaking down complicated and arcane procedures is a must to help readers understand the “how” and the “why” behind the news.
Congressional coverage is crucial to The Hill’s mission and this role will give the successful candidate the opportunity to be at the center of it.

Skills and qualifications:
A degree in journalism or a related field is required, and previous reporting experience in a metro or national media environment is preferred.
Previous experience covering the Senate is not required, but is preferred.
Candidates should have good instincts for understanding what readers want and be able to produce error-free, clean journalism on a tight timetable. Basic familiarity with Google Trends, SEO skills and real-time analytics are a plus.

Benefits and compensation:
Any person in this position will be represented by the Washington-Baltimore News Guild, Communications Workers of America Local 32035, AFL-CIO.
Compensation range: $75,000 to $85,000 commensurate with experience and skill level.
