Wavemm

Security Manager

Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo Full Time

Our mission

We're making Africa the first cashless continent.

In 2017, over half the population in Sub-Saharan Africa had no bank account. That's for good reason—the fees are too high, the closest branch can be miles away, and nobody takes cards. Without access to financial institutions, people are forced to keep their savings under the mattress. Small business owners rely on lenders who charge extortionate rates. Parents spend hours waiting in line to pay school fees in cash.

We're solving this by building financial services that just work: no account fees, instantly available, and accepted everywhere. In places where electricity, water and roads don't always work, you can still send money with Wave. In 2017, we launched a mobile app in Senegal for cash deposit, withdrawal, and peer-to-peer and business payments. Now, we have millions of users across 9 countries and are growing fast.

Our goal is to make Africa the first cashless continent and that's where you come in...

How you'll help us achieve it

At Wave Mobile Money, the Security Manager is a business-critical operator responsible for ensuring that our operating model can scale safely in a cash-intensive and high-risk environment.

This role is about more than just physical safety; it is about protecting our people, assets, and financial flows while enabling rapid business growth. You will integrate security directly into the design of our operations—particularly around cash movement and agent networks—ensuring that Wave remains resilient even in the most challenging context

In this role, you'll be responsible for:

Risk Management & Security Framework

    • Develop and maintain a security risk management framework aligned with Wave’s business objectives and local DRC requirements.
    • Implement operational security policies tailored to fintech activities (cash, agents, and network).
    • Integrate location risk considerations into agent network design and expansion decisions.
    • Identify emerging risks and propose pragmatic, growth-oriented mitigation measures.

    Analysis, Monitoring & Reporting

    • Monitor cash exposure levels, rebalancing patterns, and operational risk indicators across the network.
    • Establish a structured system for incident management and post-incident analysis.
    • Produce actionable briefings and reports with clear recommendations for leadership.
    • Develop tools for mapping risks and tracking leading indicators (e.g., high exposure nodes or repeated anomalies).

    Operational Security & Business Continuity

    • Manage physical security systems, resources, and in-house training for security staff.
    • Design and implement secure cash handling, storage, and movement practices across distribution points.
    • Serve as the primary point of contact for local security services and authorities.
    • Assess vulnerabilities for existing locations and contribute to Business Continuity Plans (BCPs).
    • Advise field teams on travel, deployments, and safety during working hours.

Support for Teams & Safety Culture

    • Empower operational teams to integrate safety practices into their daily routines without sacrificing speed.
    • Roll out security training modules on cash handling and rebalancing for field staff.
    • Promote a culture of prevention and accountability; ensure security practices are consistently applied in the field.
    • Carry out background checks for key individuals, including new hires, stakeholders, and partners.

    Protection of People & Assets

    • Implement measures to secure staff, offices, and service points (CCTV, access control, fire/intrusion detection).
    • Lead investigations into cases of embezzlement, theft, physical assault, or cash discrepancies.
    • Ensure crisis response readiness, including a 24-hour on-call support capability.

Requirements

  • Experience: Proven track record in operational security, risk management, or safety within the private sector (Fintech, NGO, or Multinationals).

  • Context: In-depth knowledge of the security landscape in the DRC and a strong local network.
  • Education: Relevant degree or professional certifications in security/risk management.

You might be a good fit if you

  • Balance Risk with Growth: You don't just say "no"; you find ways to make operations safer so we can move faster.
