Job Summary: The primary purpose of this position is to provide guide services to visitors. This position performs seasonal work that occurs predictably year-to-year in Apostle Parks.

Major Duties:

  • Major Duties may include but are not limited to the following: Provide front line information and interpretive services for visitors in the daily operation of the site. Perform a variety of duties related to the effective interpretation of the park and to the operation of the facilities within the National Lakeshore such as: greeting visitors providing basic orientation to the site and local area providing safety messages responding to questions in person and by telephone assisting with trip planning and issuing backcountry camping permits working in the cooperating association sales area restocking supplies Use and maintain audio/visual equipment and other interpretive equipment. Utilize computers and complete accurate visitor statistics. Under the supervision of higher graded employees, help present talks providing general information based on the interpretive themes of the park. Utilize existing knowledge of the Ojibwe culture as a platform for further learning and present programs on the culture and language of the Ojibwe people. Apostle Islands National Lakeshore Apostle Islands (APIS) National Lakeshore is located at the northern tip of the Bayfield Peninsula of Wisconsin 75 miles east of Duluth, Minnesota. APIS is a unit of the National Park system and contains 21 islands and 123 miles of the Wisconsin coastline of Lake Superior. The islands are spread over a portion of Lake Superior that is nearly 290,000 acres in size - an area larger than Rocky Mountain National Park - that is only accessible by boat. Eighty percent of the park is with the Gaylord Nelson Wilderness Area. The park is best known for its sea caves, kayaking, sailing, beaches and lighthouses. It has a very rich natural and cultural history, including exceptionally high quality old-growth forest, landscape scale Canada yew, among the most diverse coastal features and highest quality wetlands in the Great Lakes, maritime cliffs and forests, diverse wildlife, and habitat for Federally endangered piping plover and State endangered American marten and peregrine falcon. The park is home to over 5,000 years of human history, from Native peoples to fishermen, loggers, lighthouse keepers and recreationalists. The park's cultural resources include some 150 historic structures including one of the Nation's best-preserved collections of historic lighthouses; as well as over 130 archeological sites; thirteen cultural landscapes; sixty-six eight campsites; and over 470,000 museum objects, historical photographs, and archival records. Qualifications: All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-01/26/2026-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-03 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least six (6) months of general experience, which is (1) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. Examples of general experience include, but are not limited to, working in a retail establishment, greeting visitors, providing information, giving directions, or other work which required dealing with people on a recurring basis; and that indicates the ability to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of this position. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least 1 year of education above high school (30 semester hour or 45 quarter hours) that included at least 6 semester hours in courses such as American history, science, and/or public speaking. You must include transcripts. -OR- COMBINATION: Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. For example, 3 months of general experience (50% of the experience requirements for this position and grade level) combined with one-half year of education as outlined above (50% of the education required to qualify), which included at least 3 semester hours of related courses such as American history, science, or public speaking (50% of the directly-related courses required). Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
