Major Duties:

  • This position is non-supervisory in nature. The purpose of the position is to assist the Supervisor in directing the daily activities of the Entrance Station. The incumbent will lead three or more full-time employees on a regular and recurring basis in which the highest subordinate grade level is a GS-05. They will provide technical and policy guidance on basic fee management policies and protocols. Incumbent is also responsible for contacting visitors, collecting and accounting for fees, and disseminating the most current information. While other duties may include visitor management, related services such as traffic control, incident support, review and verification of operating manuals and SOPs; leadership duties and fee collection functions are the primary duties and constitute at least 80% of the duties of this position. Incumbent will provide on the job training, mentoring, and coaching to employees, volunteers, and/or interns in accordance with established procedures and practices. Incumbent will provide information to supervisor as requested concerning promotions, reassignment, recognition of outstanding performance, and personnel needs. South Rim Area Information: This position is stationed at South Rim of the Grand Canyon National Park located in Northern Arizona. The South Rim is approximately 60 miles north of Williams and 82 miles Northwest of Flagstaff, at an elevation of 7,000 feet. Temperatures range from approximately 90 degrees in the summer to 0 degrees in the winter. Annual precipitation averages around 13 inches. Grand Canyon Village has schools K-12, a daycare center, post office, general store, churches, a recreation center with gym, a public library, a clinic with resident physicians, and several restaurants. The park community consists of some 2,500 people, including employees of the NPS and concessioners and their family members. There are often employment opportunities for family members in the park and surrounding areas. The park community is small enough that many employees choose to walk or bike from their homes to work. Complete shopping, educational, medical, and professional services are available in Williams and Flagstaff. Flagstaff has a population of about 75,000 and has multiple K-12 public and private schools, Northern Arizona University, and diverse community, medical and other support services. Recreational opportunities include hiking, backpacking, fishing, cross-country and downhill skiing, and golfing in nearby communities. North Rim Area Information: The North Rim District is located on the rim of the Grand Canyon amidst the vast public lands of the Arizona Strip. It is approximately 20 miles from the South Rim by a strenuous hike through the canyon or a 215-mile drive (about 4 hours). The nearest full-service community is Kanab, Utah, roughly 80 miles away. At an elevation of about 8,200 feet, the North Rim enjoys a mild summer climate, with daytime highs in the 80s and nighttime lows in the 50s.Historically, the North Rim welcomed around 500,000 visitors between May 15 and October 15. The area featured a robust concession operation, including the historic Grand Canyon Lodge, guest cabins, a general store, post office, gas station, campground, and mule ride concession. In July 2025, the Dragon Bravo Fire significantly impacted the North Rim, burning over 145,000 acres. This resulted in the loss of key infrastructure, including the historic lodge, visitor center, and multiple administrative and housing facilities. As a result, most of the North Rim was closed for the remainder of the 2025 season, and all visitor services were suspended. Recovery efforts are ongoing, with a focus on emergency stabilization, cultural resource protection, and long-term restoration planning. Despite these challenges, the North Rim remains a vital part of Grand Canyon National Park. Employees working in or for this district will be part of a dedicated team contributing to the recovery and reimagining of a treasured landscape. The post-fire environment presents unique opportunities for innovation, stewardship, and resilience. Recreational opportunities in the region remain abundant, including hiking, running, climbing, canyoneering, rafting, road and mountain biking, and skiing. Nearby destinations such as Zion National Park, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Vermilion Cliffs National Monument, and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument are all within a half-day's drive.

Qualifications: All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-05/11/2026-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-06 grade level, you must possess the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: (1) providing information or assistance to the public in a business or recreation setting (2) compiling and analyzing information to report (3) handling, tracking, or depositing monies (4) using software programs to maintain fee and stock data (5) resolving issues that arise in the remittance process and assisting staff with fee issues. You must include hours per week worked. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Demands: This position requires standing for long periods of time, as well as walking, bending, and lifting of moderately heavy items. Mental stress and physical fatigue occur due to the high volume of personal contacts and the responsibility of dealing with large amounts of money. If applicable, extreme physical exertion may be required while performing search and rescue, wildland firefighting, or emergency response duties. Work Environment: This position typically works at an entrance station, campground office, fee office, remit office, visitor center, and/or visitor contact station. Work is often performed in small, outdoor structures with open windows which results in exposure to extremes of temperature, rain, snow, wind, and direct sunlight. Park areas may be geographically located in areas of high elevation, rugged terrain, or dense populations. High levels of vehicle noise and emissions may exist during heavy visitation periods. Duties may be performed alone and/or in isolated locations.
