Job Summary: The Pacific West Region is recruiting for temporary Seasonal Cartographic Technician GS-1371-7 positions intended to assist permanent staff with a variety of duties involved in the development of cartographic products. The typical entry-on-duty dates vary by location. See Duties section. Open to the first 125 applicants or until 12/23/2025 , whichever comes first. Major Duties:

  • The Pacific West Region is recruiting for TEMPORARY seasonal positions not to exceed 1039 hours work in a service year. Dates of employment will vary between park sites depending on funding, weather conditions and visitation. Within regulatory limitations, the length of initial appointment may be shortened or extended depending on work availability and funding. Golden Gate National Recreation Area - expected entry-on-duty is March, 2026. Yosemite National Park - expected entry-on-duty is June, 2026. Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks - expected entry-on-duty is April, 2026 Major Duties: Visits field sites to gather information, utilizing accepted field mapping techniques which may include GPS, total stations, tape and compass, alidade and plane table or any combination thereof. Independently inputs both routine and complex spatial and non-spatial digital data to draft format, field compilation, CAD or GIS. Utilizes GIS, GPS, CAD and related programs and technology to analyze data to recommend the most appropriate course of action to meet park objectives. Produces user-ready original or derived thematic maps in variable formats and media at various scales with appropriate symbols, legends, and title blocks. Physical Demands: This work requires long periods of sitting in front of computer terminals. Some prolonged bending, crouching, lifting (up to 50 lbs.), climbing and reaching are required to perform routine hardware maintenance and move equipment. Digitizing data requires extended periods of standing, sitting, and stretching over large drafting tables while recording/measuring map data with a computer mouse. Working Conditions: This work is usually performed in an office setting. Outdoor field work in varied climatic and terrain conditions is required.

Qualifications: All qualifications must be met by 11:59 EST on the closing date or when the 'applicant cut-off' is reached (which may be sooner than 12/23/2025). Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: technician work to compile, reduce, store, retrieve, analyze, and report data and other resource management information; cartographic, engineering, or biological technician work that involved the application of GIS/GPS practices on cultural, resource conservation, or land management when combined with knowledge of GIS software and hardware operations and equipment. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one full year of graduate level education (18 semester hours) in courses directly related to the work of this position such as cartography, astronomy, geodesy, photogrammetry, oceanography, computer science, land surveying, geophysics, or remote sensing. You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a COMBINATION of education and experience as described above. Combination can include: six months of the specialized experience (50% of the experience requirement), and 9 semester hours of graduate level study in courses directly related to the work of this position (50% of the qualifying education). Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include hours per week worked and transcripts. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. CTAP/ICTAP Statement: Current surplus and current or former displaced Federal individuals who have special priority selection rights under the Agency Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP) or the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP) must be well qualified for the position to receive consideration for special priority selection.
