Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) are required by a series of international regulations/standards to accurately describe workplace chemical hazards and provide information on safe handling, use, and storage. The Lilly Global Hazard Communication (GHC) team authors region-specific safety data sheets for Lilly substances, intermediates, and formulations. The documents are used extensively within and outside the company for obtaining information related to product hazards, appropriate handling recommendations, shipping, labeling, exposure limits, and emergency management of spills and fires.

This role is primarily responsible for authoring SDSs, providing effective hazard communication to Lilly and our partners in compliance with global regulations and policies. Scientist will work closely with business partners like Research & Development, Manufacturing, and Supply Chain to ensure pro-active, lean and compliant processes are in place.  The position will also work very closely with internal and periodically external experts in toxicology, ecotoxicology, transportation, labelling, IT, industrial hygiene, process safety and health safety environmental to ensure business needs are met.

Scientist - Global Hazard Communication responsibilities

Hazard classification and development of safety data sheets

  • Review and interpret chemical, toxicological, medical and environmental data and develop concise summaries of relevant data to be incorporated into the SDS
  • Conduct scientifically defensible hazard assessments in accordance with global hazard communication regulations and industry best practice.  This includes using professional judgment to develop credible and accurate hazard assessments when available data is insufficient.
  • Develop classifications for the transportation of dangerous goods in the U.S. and internationally.
  • Author Safety Data Sheets (SDS) in the 3EGenerate® or equivalent system for manufactured materials, assuring compliance with international regulatory guidelines (GHS, OSHA, CLP, REACh, WHMIS, etc).
  • Maintain awareness and keep team informed of new industry best practice, impending regulation, and global initiatives impacting SDSs, hazard classification, and handling recommendations.
  • Respond to customer requests regarding potential hazards and safe handling information on Lilly SDS.

General SDS support

  • Responsible for SDS authoring processes and procedures.
  • System owner and admin for 3EGenerate® SDS authoring system.
  • Business owner and manager of the external Lilly SDS website and communications (e.g. team email).
  • Oversee SDS global translation process.
  • Support process improvement efforts to streamline our SDS processes and services across the enterprise and ensure a strong data maintenance process related to the SDS/labelling program is in place.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in health science related field (e.g., pharmacy, toxicology, chemistry, biology, or engineering)
  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience in global SDS authoring, preferably in the pharmaceutical industry.

Additional Skills/Preferences

  • Excellent critical thinking, problem solving, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to evaluate toxicology studies and scientific literature, summarizing the relevant data.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to use and apply a variety of computer applications with high degree of accuracy.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy of work along with ability to see big picture perspective.
  • Strong collaboration & communication skills; able to effectively engage and convene diverse groups and lead teams.
  • Demonstrated self-management skills with ability to work effectively both independently and as a team member.
  • Solid understanding of global SDS/GHS regulations and experience in the various regulatory compliance systems.
  • Product stewardship experience
  • Experience in 3EGenerate® SDS authoring.

Actual compensation will depend on a candidate’s education, experience, skills, and geographic location.  The anticipated wage for this position is

$65,250 - $169,400

Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual performance).
