About Flinders University International Centre for Point-of-Care Testing

The Flinders University International Centre for Point-of Care Testing (ICPOCT) is a global leader in point-of-care testing (POCT) and is recognised for expertise in POCT research and teaching, encompassing chronic, acute and infectious diseases. The Centre’s research activities have made a significant contribution to increasing access to health care and improving health outcomes, particularly in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and in rural and remote settings nationally and internationally.

About the Role

The Scientific Officer plays a key role in supporting the delivery of infectious disease point‑of‑care testing programs, with a strong focus on the National Australian Hepatitis C POCT Program. Working across a diverse range of health settings—including regional and remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, Drug and Alcohol services, and Justice Health services—the role delivers training, quality management support, and hands‑on testing services. This position contributes to program logistics, scientific troubleshooting, data management and research coordination, ensuring high‑quality, accessible testing that supports improved health outcomes nationally.

  • Delivering point-of-care operator training, competency assessment and quality‑assured POCT support to health workers across multiple service settings.

  • Coordinating and supporting onsite high intensity testing campaigns, including capillary blood collection and HCV point‑of‑care testing in correctional services.

  • Providing scientific and technical support for POCT devices, systems and software both remotely and onsite.

  • Supporting program data management, research activities and preparation of program-related publications and resources.

This position makes a significant contribution to the University’s strategic plan to changing 10 million lives, Every One Matters, by 2035 through being a champion of Innovation and Excellence in delivering quality‑assured point‑of‑care testing that strengthens health outcomes for priority populations.

About You

You are an adaptable and skilled medical scientist or scientific professional who brings hands‑on experience in point‑of‑care testing, blood collection, and data‑driven research. You excel in both autonomous and collaborative environments, demonstrating strong communication, cultural capability and a commitment to high‑quality, evidence‑based practice. Your ability to train, support and engage health workers—often in diverse and remote settings—ensures the delivery of safe, accurate and meaningful patient outcomes.

  • A relevant degree paired with experience in capillary blood collection and performing diagnostic point‑of‑care testing.

  • Strong scientific, analytical and technical skills, including the ability to troubleshoot POCT devices, manage data, and maintain clear and accurate records.

  • Well‑developed written and verbal communication skills, along with proficiency in ICT systems and Microsoft Office applications.

  • The ability to work effectively and respectfully with culturally diverse groups, including experience supporting and training health professionals.
