Job Description:
The Electronics Development Group in the Department of Physics & Astronomy is seeking an electronics technician (research specialist 1 or 2). The Electronics Development Group provides comprehensive technical support for the teaching and research missions of the Department of Physics and Astronomy including the design and fabrication of specialized electronic circuits, instruments and systems, maintenance of custom built and commercial instruments, and general technical support to faculty, staff and students.
Research Specialist 1 Responsibilities:
- Troubleshoot, repair, calibrate and maintain a wide variety of scientific instruments used in the teaching and research missions of the Department of Physics and Astronomy and other departments. Provide custom modifications to instruments and equipment for specialized purposes including interfacing scientific instruments to computer systems.
- Fabricate custom electronic instrumentation under the overall direction of the Electronic Development Group manager or faculty supervisor. Fabrication may be at the circuit, board, or system level and may involve analog, digital and power systems. Layout of printed circuit boards using CAD techniques. Produce engineering drawings and technical documentation. Test and evaluate prototype and final instrumentation, report results and make decisions or suggestions for product improvement.
- Provide technical assistance, instruction and consultation to faculty, students and staff members for resolution of technical problems. Determine and order parts and supplies necessary for completion of assigned projects.
- Perform other related duties incidental to the work described above.
Research Specialist 2 Responsibilities:
- Assist with project planning. Provide cost estimates and design reviews. Create and implement plans for prototypes. Evaluate test results and make decisions for product development. Serve as project or systems engineer as required. Determine and order parts and supplies necessary for completion of assigned projects.
- Design, implementation and repair of electronic circuits, instruments and systems for experimental research. Systems may include analog and digital electronics, hardware/software co-design, embedded processors, field programmable gate arrays (FPGA), complex programmable logic devices (CPLD), data acquisition systems, and electronic monitoring/control systems. Troubleshoot, repair, calibrate and maintain a wide variety of scientific instruments used in the teaching and research missions of the Department of Physics and Astronomy and other departments. Provide custom modifications to instruments and equipment for specialized purposes including interfacing scientific instruments to computer systems.
- Recommend, write specifications for and coordinate procurement of electronic and computer components, instruments and systems. Participate in hiring, counseling, and training of student employees.
- Additional duties assigned by supervisor and/or department chair.
Minimum Qualifications: (Research specialist 1) Bachelor's degree in engineering, science or closely related field with one year of related experience. (Research specialist 2) Bachelor's degree in engineering, science or closely related field with three years of related experience.
