JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

The Rao Lab seeks a motivated and detail-oriented Research Associate to support research on fungal pathogens and host–pathogen interactions. This entry-level position provides hands-on experience in microbiology, molecular biology, and infectious disease research, with a focus on clinically relevant fungi such as Candida, Aspergillus, Cryptococcus, and Fusarium species.

The research associate will assist with routine laboratory operations, experimental workflows, and data collection under the supervision of senior research staff.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Key Responsibilities:

Laboratory & Experimental Support

  • Perform routine culturing and maintenance of fungal strains (e.g., Candida albicans, Aspergillus fumigatus)
  • Prepare media, reagents, and sterile supplies following standard protocols
  • Assist with molecular biology techniques (DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis)
  • Support infection assays (in vitro and/or model systems, as appropriate)
  • Conduct basic microscopy and imaging (light, fluorescence as applicable)

Data Collection & Documentation

  • Record experimental procedures and results in laboratory notebooks (electronic and/or paper)
  • Assist with data entry, basic analysis, and figure preparation
  • Maintain accurate inventory of strains, reagents, and supplies

Laboratory Operations

  • Maintain sterile technique and adhere to biosafety protocols (BSL-2 practices as applicable)
  • Clean and organize laboratory spaces and equipment
  • Assist with equipment maintenance and calibration
  • Support ordering and stocking of consumables

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, or a related field
  • Foundational knowledge of microbiology and laboratory techniques
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to follow protocols precisely and work independently after training
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior coursework or laboratory experience in microbiology or mycology
  • Familiarity with aseptic technique and microbial culturing
  • Exposure to molecular biology techniques (PCR, cloning, sequencing)
  • Experience with data analysis tools (e.g., Excel, basic statistical software)

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

  • Laboratory setting with potential exposure to microbial cultures and chemical reagents
  • Must follow institutional biosafety and safety guidelines
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and perform repetitive bench work

Compensation:
