Renewable Energy Specialist Lead

OCONUS-Antarctica-McMurdo Station Full time

Position Responsibilities: 

  • Assist the MEC Supervisor with pre-season planning of renewable energy equipment use by grantees and field camps. 

  • Research and procure new renewable energy equipment and material for current and future projects 

  • Assess suitability of equipment to grantee needs, design and implement modifications and custom fabrications as required. 

  • Design, install, and maintain residential size off-grid power systems in the field, including integration with 120/240 volt power systems 

  • Assign daily tasking, oversee work quality and quantity, and write performance review for Renewable Energy Assistant 

  • Performs diagnosis and repair of renewable energy equipment and systems as required. 

  • Provides training in operation and field maintenance to grantees and support personnel. 

  • Performs on-site work to equipment in field as required. 

  • Develops plans for future expansion of the renewable energy program in USAP field science. 

  • Documents all work performed and maintains pertinent records. 

  • Operates and maintains shop equipment including welders, compressors, presses, etc. 

  • Coordinate with material personnel to maintain inventory of electrical material, balance of system componentry and tools and procures material as necessary. 

  • Maintains a clean, orderly, and safe work area. 

  • Support the achievement of ASC metrics, whether they can be directly or indirectly effected by your activities. 

  • Comply with ASC Environmental Health & Safety and Quality Assurance requirements and goals. Provide documentation to these divisions as necessary to ensure adequate and legal documentation. 

  • Work to achieve ASC goals and contractual commitments. 

  • Maintain a safe workplace program and ensure safety is the highest priority in the workplace. 

  • Performs other duties as required 

 

Required Education, Experience, Certificates and Licenses: 

  • High School diploma or GED 

  • Minimum of four years’ experience in design, installation, maintenance and repair of off-grid battery storage photovoltaic and wind generator systems  

  • Minimum one of the four years’ experience must be in a supervisory role  

  • A current Journeyman Electrician license or greater.  

 

Preferred: 

  • Technical school training in the renewable energy field is desired. 

  • Experience with installing and programming Outback Power System products  

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite 

  • Past work history with Outback Power Systems 

  • Past work history with battery-based power system  

 

Physical and/or Other Requirements: 

  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods  

  • Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica 

  • Successful completion of drug screening and background check required by employer 

  • Successful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSF 

  • Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum as required by the position.  

  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold as required by the position.  

  • Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safety objectives 

  • Valid Driver’s License issued in the United States 

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location.
