Major Duties :• Oversight, in conjunction with direct line managers and market leaders, for an expanded Investment Services unit or function. Conducts the performance management process, or provides oversight and guidance to other managers identifies training and development needs, and establishes performance standards for the region
• Actively engages with senior regional leadership to assess investment needs, to provide guidance on engagement around initiatives, and to collaborate on the establishment of collective goals
• Participates, as directed by Regional Presidents, in regional leadership committees and groups
• Participates, as directed by Chief Investment Officer, on appropriate national committees
• Collaborates with leadership in determining staffing needs, making hiring and firing decisions, handling salary administration, and ensuring resources are available to accomplish priorities. Participates in proactive discussions relative talent and succession planning for the region to ensure a sustainable and competent workforce
• Ensures managers and associates in the region are informed on investment initiatives, processes, and investment strategy. Fosters environment of collaboration among region investment professionals to share best practices and experience with the goal of increasing consistency and manager skills
• Provides frequent advice to region investment professionals surrounding client matters, investment policy and guidelines, policies and procedures and other workflows
• Actively engages with National Investment Practice, providing feedback on needs of clients and investment partners while also driving key national initiatives at the regional level.
• Manages investment activities for a full set of major fee revenue producing accounts, representing large and sensitive high net worth personal trusts, individual investments, and court appointed accounts
• Develops, recommends, and directs the execution of programs designed to achieve investment objectives for specific individual or institutional clients. Reviews and analyzes investments to select assets
• Analyzes and plans the overall investment strategy with continuous revision of accounts objectives and
the context of client needs
• Maintains extensive contact with trust and banking relationship managers, clients, co-trustees, consultants, the bank's legal area and outside attorneys to ensure communication of client requirements and coordinate portfolio activity
• Participates in the development of new investment business with sales staff
• Responsible for compliance oversight in the region ensuring all investment management partners are aware of and in compliance of all related policies. Reviews and provides recommendations relative to trading losses. Works with PMs to understand and interpret tools such as the PM Dashboard and Compliance Scorecard
• Provides advanced level approvals for the region for trades that require this as well as activities such as NT Alts
Knowledge :• Deep knowledge of, and engagement with, National Practice in terms of best practices and strategic initiatives
• Advanced leadership skills associated with change management, mentoring/skills/talent development, and deepening field engagement at all levels
• Advanced communication and organizational skills
• High level of cross-functional knowledge, incorporating banking, advisory and fiduciary perspectives into decision making when appropriate
• Enterprise frame of mind, with a collaborative business owner mentality driving decision making.
• Knowledge of investment and portfolio management theory, accounting, and financial principles, and investment strategies and instruments, acquired through formal education and work experience, is required to manage portfolios or conduct research activities
• Knowledge of investment terminology, characteristics of the various marketplaces, the laws and regulations governing trust investments and taxation, the bank's investment policies, procedures, and strategies, acquired through work experience and formal education, is required to manage portfolios or investment research activities
• Sales and negotiating skills are required to guide sensitive or difficult situations
• High level of business acumen, applying broad industry knowledge and commercial awareness to drive financial performance
• Negotiates with senior leaders across the business
Experience :• Over 15 years of applicable investment experience, including the management of large and complex investment relationships
• Proven leadership qualities
• Deep knowledge of investment risk and compliance issues
• Demonstrated history of strategic thinking
Salary Range:
$236,555 - 414,115 USDSalary range is a good faith estimate of base pay. Northern Trust provides a comprehensive benefits package including retirement benefits (401k and pension), health and welfare benefits (medical, dental, vision, spending accounts and disability), paid time off, parental and caregiver leave, life & accident insurance, and other voluntary and well-being benefits. Northern Trust also provides a discretionary bonus program that may include an equity component.
