Job Description

The Real Estate Loan Investments (RELI) team at Columbia Thread needle Investments is looking for a Sr. Legal Manager to provide legal support for complex commercial real estate lending transactions. This role is responsible for preparing and maintaining loan documentation and coordinating the resolution of legal issues with RELI staff, mortgage brokers, borrowers and outside legal counsel.

Key Responsibilities
1. Prepare complex legal documentation for commercial real estate mortgage loans e.g., applications and rate lock letters. Negotiate changes to applications with underwriter,  mortgage bankers and borrowers and their legal counsel, and seek advice from regional counsel to resolve issues as needed. Draft and approve revisions to legal terms and maintain database.

2. Prepare and approve consent letters and coordinate closings for transfers/assumptions and other miscellaneous requests of existing loans.

3. Create and develop model loan application and closing documents to minimize lender risk.  Collect, solicit and respond to feedback and provide outside counsel with current forms on an on-going basis.

4. Work effectively with network of outside legal counsel, business partners and commercial mortgage bankers to ensure quality and successful business and legal processes. Review and approve reports to meet industry standards, lender guidelines, and manage risk for the lender and company.  Keep management informed of any potential problems or issues. 
 
5. Work with RELI staff to update and implement improvements to RELI legal policies and procedures.  Work with GCO on conflict waivers, litigation matters and investment guidelines and policies for life insurance companies.   Act as commercial mortgage document and legal subject matter expert.

6. Manage special projects concerning legal issues as needed, e.g., coordinate response to requests from auditors and/or regulators; support RELI staff with problem loan events, foreclosures and REO properties.  Serve as a single point of contact for mortgage loan legal issues. Adhere to commercial mortgage industry lending standards and best practices.

Required Qualifications
1. Bachelors degree, preferably with a degree focus in legal or finance. 
2. Paralegal certificate from an ABA-approved program. 
3. 5-7 years experience in commercial real estate lending / servicing  management.
4. Excellent communication, analytical and problem solving skills.
5. Ability to work independently with strong attention to detail.

Base Pay Salary

The estimated base salary for this role is $93,400- $128,400 / year. We have a pay-for-performance compensation philosophy. Your initial total compensation may vary based on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and geographical work location. In addition, most of our roles are eligible for variable pay in the form of bonus, commissions, and/or long-term incentives depending on the role.
