PSE Chief Artificial Intelligence (AI) Officer

The PSE Chief Artificial Intelligence (AI) Officer serves as a strategic advisor to the directorate, providing expert guidance on the vision, development, and execution of AI initiatives that advance scientific discovery and align with the Laboratory’s broader mission.

Key Responsibilities

  • Partner with directorate leadership to shape, implement, and lead the directorate’s AI strategy, ensuring successful execution across programs and projects.

  • Engage with PSE leadership and staff to develop, coordinate, and clearly communicate a cohesive AI strategy aligned with the overall Laboratory strategy.

  • Provide strategic consultation to PSE leadership on the long-term vision and direction of AI in scientific research.

  • Collaborate with a diverse community of scientists within Argonne and with external partners to apply state-of-the-art AI methods to accelerate scientific discovery.

  • Represent PSE in scheduled conference calls and engagements with external collaborators, co-innovators, and technology partners.

  • Advise leadership on identifying funding opportunities and support the development of competitive funding proposals to advance AI programs.

  • Adapt and evolve leadership approaches and strategies as AI initiatives scale and mature across the directorate.

Position Requirements

  • Bachelors and 12+ years of experience, Masters and 7+ years, PhD and 6+ years, or equivalent.

  • Ability to build effective working relationships across the organization and with external collaborators.

  • Possess technical expertise, strategic vision, leadership and ethical insight to successfully lead AI initiatives.

  • Demonstrate technical skills in AI and machine learning, data science and analytics, traditional software development, and an understanding of AI infrastructure.

The expected hiring range for this position is $169,507.00 - $264,431.70.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as, but not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, business considerations, internal equity, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
