Job Summary
The Project Manager will be responsible for managing, developing and implementing strategies for a wide range of disability-related projects. This will include reviewing medical documentation, assessing accommodations and adjudicating request for priority housing, special consideration for admissions and academic concessions. The Project Manager will have to understand and be able to apply human rights legislation, Policy LR7 and other academic regulations. Due to the exponential growth in these requests, the Project Manager will be developing new standardized procedures with partner units, implementing online systems and designing rubrics to streamline the assessment and response time for these requests. This position will also be responsible for advising non-UBC students by assessing medical documentation and providing preliminary academic accommodations. This may include prospective students and other students in non-UBC colleges/programs on the UBC Point Grey campus.
Organizational Status
The Centre for Accessibility provides leadership on issues of accessibility for students with disabilities on the UBC Vancouver campus and facilitates disability related accommodations for members of the UBC Vancouver campus. The Project Manager will report to the Director of the Centre for Accessibility, Student Affairs and work collaboratively as a member of a team of professionals.
The incumbent will work in a standard office environment at UBC Vancouver. Some evening and weekend work is required.
Work Performed
· Assess and adjudicate decisions as they pertain to student special admissions requests using an intersectional approach with a focus on disability and ongoing medical conditions.
· Advise students regarding eligibility, next steps, and options
· Evaluates and applies student development theory as well as medical and accessibility related advising rubrics by reviewing priority housing requests made based on a disability. Make decisions that have significant legal or academic impact.
· Communicates complex information, including documentation guidelines outlining disability grounds for the request by informing students about the requirements for a priority housing application.
· Work in partnership with other campus units (Housing, Enrolment Services, Academic Advising, etc.) to develop a precise understanding of housing options and availability.
· Manage the review and development of new communication guidelines to ensure the proper triage of students requesting for priority housing
· Design and implement new systems and projects to streamline how requests are made, communicating timelines and the unit’s ability to efficiently review priority housing requests in a timely manner.
· Resolve a wide range of complex issues and escalate the most complex issues to Senior staff or resolve them in collaboration with others.
· Interpret and review University policy in relation to individual student admissions acceptance and program requirements. This position will consult with Senior CFA staff and will make recommendations based on disability grounds.
· Assess requests for Special Admissions Consideration based on disability or an ongoing medical condition, and make clearly communicated, well supported decisions that have significant legal or academic impact.
· Works closely with departments to understand requirements for admission, many of which require specific experience and accreditation. Assessments will include a high-level understanding of how the applicant’s disability may impact program admissions requirements.
· Works in partnership with UBC Health and other post-graduate programs to review and recommend special admission requests. This will include Medicine, Pharmacy, Education and Law faculties. The Project Manager will be expected to have a thorough knowledge of admissions requirements and must develop processes to support every recommendation.
· Meets directly with prospective students, responds to requests, offers subject-matter expertise and professional advice. Must be able to accurately convey realistic supports and experiences for prospective students with disabilities looking to attend UBC Vancouver. This position must be able to forecast potential difficulties that the student has not even identified to proactively put into motion potential support as well as encouraging students to meet with other health support resources.
· Meets directly with non-UBC students (Real Estate, Affiliate Colleges, Extended Learning) to determine academic accommodations. Identifies more complex cases and consults with Accessibility Project Managers or Management as needed.
· Acts as a liaison with medical professionals, professional staff, community partners and instructors to determine appropriateness of recommendations/accommodations.
· Routinely identifies students who are at-risk and may require urgent support by connecting that student with resources and support as appropriate, including engaging the University’s Early Alert system.
· Manage the various modes of communication from the Centre to students and community members. This includes updating and editing the Introductory Canvas Course, creating/maintaining presentations and coordinating the Centre’s social media strategy.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
The decisions could potentially be questioned or formally appealed via a human rights tribunal complaint or UBC Senate and so the consequence to error is critical. The areas of adjudication have significant legal and academic impact. Failure to meet the expectations of the job may create severe hardship for prospective and current students to UBC and/or severe public relations or legal difficulties for the Centre for Accessibility and the University.
Supervision Received
Supervision will be provided by senior management at the Centre, which includes the Director, Associate Directors and Manager. Incumbent acts independently within established guidelines.

Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three to four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
