Role Overview
The Monitoring Engineer is a hands‑on technical role responsible for the day‑to‑day administration, configuration, and maintenance of enterprise monitoring platforms, with a primary focus on New Relic.
The role supports the delivery of effective monitoring and observability across FNZ platforms by implementing agreed monitoring standards, maintaining tooling health, and ensuring monitoring configurations remain current and reliable.
This position works closely with Monitoring Architects, Senior Analysts, Production Support, and Engineering teams. Monitoring requirements, strategy, and design direction are driven by Architects and senior operational stakeholders; the Monitoring Engineer is responsible for implementing, maintaining, and supporting those requirements effectively.
The Monitoring Engineer plays a key role in ensuring monitoring tooling enables timely issue detection, efficient incident investigation, and improved platform reliability.
Team Responsibilities
The current climate has no tolerance for slow performance, broken functionality or downtime with a need for constant and clear visibility into the end-to-end performance of our production applications.
Application Monitoring – developing new and innovative solutions to our monitoring requirements.
Stakeholder Communication – ensuring all monitoring solutions are embedded into production BAU and handed over to our operational support teams.
Project management – Manage our monitoring solutions from design, build, test, implementation and handover. Our team follows a Devops model so we will maintain our tooling and build for any upgrades, defects or improvements after go live.
Service Level Management – support the Service Managers in delivering FNZ services within KPIs, SLAs and contractual obligations.
Specific Role Responsibilities
Administer and maintain New Relic monitoring components under guidance from Architects and Senior Analysts, including agent configuration, alert policies, dashboards, and integrations.
Ensure New Relic agents are installed, configured correctly, and upgraded in accordance with agreed schedules and standards.
Implement monitoring for new services, applications, or infrastructure following provided requirements and design guidance.
Assist in managing requests for new monitoring deployments or changes, ensuring they are implemented accurately and consistently.
Support the maintenance of alerting rules and thresholds to ensure they are meaningful, reliable, and aligned with operational needs.
Create and maintain dashboards and visualisations to support Production Support and Engineering teams.
Maintain accurate documentation, including setup guides, configuration details, and operational runbooks.
Support vendor support cases and escalations, including collecting evidence and implementing recommended fixes.
Assist in tooling health checks and reviews to ensure monitoring platforms remain operational and effective.
Where applicable, support monitoring configuration using Infrastructure‑as‑Code approaches (e.g. Terraform) under guidance.
Leadership & Development
Work collaboratively with Architects, Senior Analysts, and Engineers to understand monitoring requirements and implement solutions.
Develop and maintain technical knowledge of New Relic and associated monitoring capabilities.
Share monitoring knowledge and best practices with Production Support and Engineering teams.
Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to improve monitoring quality and operational effectiveness.
Contribute to audit, risk, and operational assurance activities where required.
Experience Required
What we are looking for:
Minimum 5 years of experience in Monitoring, Production Support, Platform Operations, or similar technical roles.
Hands‑on experience working with New Relic or similar monitoring/observability tools.
Experience maintaining monitoring agents, integrations, dashboards, and alert configurations.
Understanding of basic observability concepts including metrics, logs, alerts, and service health.
Good technical troubleshooting skills and a methodical problem‑solving approach.
Strong attention to detail when implementing and maintaining tooling configurations.
Ability to follow architectural guidance and implement agreed standards consistently.
Clear written and verbal communication skills for documentation and team collaboration.
Experience Preferred
Beneficial but not essential:
Exposure to managing monitoring configuration at scale, including use of Terraform or similar tools.
Understanding of OTEL standards.
Experience working with operational tooling such as ServiceNow, PagerDuty, or Splunk.
Experience supporting monitoring in cloud, virtualised, or distributed environments.
Basic familiarity with application technologies such as .NET, APIs, SQL Server, or microservices.
