Givedirectly

Product & M&E Field Manager

Nampula Full Time

GiveDirectly (GD) aims to reshape international giving – and millions of lives – by providing cash grants directly to the world’s poorest. The Brookings Institution estimates that $70B of cash transfers would be required to eliminate the poverty gap; the aid sector currently spends $135B each year, much of it on evidence-free interventions. GiveDirectly wants to change that, establishing cash transfers as a benchmark for foreign aid – as the index fund is a benchmark for the financial industry – and in the process accelerating the end of extreme poverty.

GD has raised over $1B since launching in 2011 and delivered cash to more than 2 million people in 15 different countries. We’ve also supported large-scale, experimental research that indicates strong recipient impact of our programs. As a result, GD has been celebrated as one of the most innovative non-profit companies by Fast Company, while the growing cash transfer movement (and GD’s leading role within it) have been featured in the New York Times Magazine, This American Life, Foreign Affairs, and The Economist.

Our culture is candid, analytical, agile, and non-hierarchical. Our global team of ~150, and country operations teams of ~650, span 21 different countries and 69 languages. From software engineers to seasoned humanitarian workers, management consultants to public servants, researchers to field operations -- it’s an incredible group of people.

Our values are central and deliberately opinionated. We genuinely center the people we serve in our decision-making, and strive to build an ambitious, dynamic and high-performing environment. We strongly encourage you to read through our values carefully, if they reflect how you like to work and energize you, this could be a great fit.

We work hard to create an environment in which all our team members can thrive, succeed, and grow.  We support high ownership, flexibility, take care of each other, have fun, and create professional growth opportunities.

Product & M&E Manager

Job Type: Full-time

Location: Nampula Province, Mozambique (field-based, with occasional travel)

Level: Field Manager (FM)

Reports to: Program Director, Mozambique

About GiveDirectly

GiveDirectly (GD) provides cash grants directly to people living in extreme poverty. Since launching in 2011, GD has raised over $1B, delivered cash to more than 1.5 million recipients, launched operations in 15 countries, and continues to expand its reach across the Global South. GD has built one of the strongest evidence bases in international development - with 20 randomized control trials - and is consistently ranked among the most impactful and innovative organizations in the sector.

Our culture is candid, analytical, agile, and non-hierarchical. We genuinely center the people we serve in our decision-making and strive to build an ambitious, fast-moving, high-performing environment. GiveDirectly in Mozambique operates in Nampula Province, with programs reaching recipients in some of the country's most remote and fragile contexts.

About this Role

GiveDirectly Mozambique is looking for a Product & M&E Manager to lead product development and monitoring and evaluation work in-country. This is a distinctive opportunity to shape how GiveDirectly delivers cash programs: working at the frontier of program design rather than simply executing established models.

Spending roughly 75% of their time on product work and 25% on M&E, this person will drive user-centered program design: running qualitative research with recipients, co-creating and testing new program features, piloting and scaling innovations, and grounding our programs in evidence adapted to context. On M&E, they will lead monitoring systems and rapid experiments that continuously improve program quality.

Immediate initiatives to drive progress on include the design and deployment of a coaching model to accompany cash transfers, and conducting research to explore recipient preferences in fragile settings such as northern Mozambique. Beyond these initial priorities, the product portfolio may evolve fragile settings potentially including new program models focused on maternal and child health or resilience to climate shocks - and this person will be expected to help shape what comes next.

Responsibilities

Product Development (~75%)

The product workload will shift over time as initiatives move from design to scale or transition to the Programs team. Core recurring responsibilities include:

  • Co-create new program features and products alongside GD's global Product team, serving as the in-country lead from early design through piloting and scale - including contextualizing content and delivery approaches to the Mozambique setting, and coordinating with Programs to integrate new elements into existing delivery workflows. Current examples include a coaching model for cash recipients and scoping for a potential mothers and babies program.
  • Design and lead qualitative research with recipients - including focus group discussions, key informant interviews, and user tests - to surface preferences, barriers, and contextual factors that should shape program design. Current work includes a study on recipient preferences in fragile settings in northern Mozambique.
  • Plan and execute user tests of program features and communication materials (e.g., survey questions, baraza scripts, consent flows, visual aids), using structured methods to generate credible, reusable insights for GD's global product community.
  • Facilitate A/B testing of program tools and document results in accessible formats for cross-country sharing and re-use.
  • Synthesize field-level insights - from recipients, frontline staff, and pilots - into actionable product recommendations, and represent Mozambique's context in global product design conversations.
  • Collaborate with external researchers and academic partners on product-related research, serving as the key in-country liaison.
  • Participate in GiveDirectly's global product network: attending user-testing training, bi-weekly peer check-ins with focal points in other countries, global Product syncs, and the annual Product retreat.

Monitoring & Evaluation (~25%)

  • Design and maintain M&E systems for active programs in Mozambique, including indicator tracking, data quality assurance, and periodic performance reviews.
  • Support the design and execution of rapid experiments across programs, coordinating measurement approaches with Programs teams and external partners.
  • Prepare and manage clean, analysis-ready datasets from survey, administrative, and operational data sources.
  • Produce clear, actionable analysis of program performance and experimental results for decision-making by the Country and Program leadership.
  • Prepare concise learning products - data briefs, memos, presentations - for internal teams and, where required, for donors and external stakeholders.
  • Contribute to cross-country M&E learning by sharing Mozambique findings and practices with GiveDirectly's global M&E community.

Programs Surge Support (ad hoc)

  • Provide occasional, time-limited operational support to the Programs team during peaks in activity.

What You'll Bring

Required

  • Exceptional alignment with GiveDirectly's values and a genuine commitment to centering recipients in program and product design decisions.
  • 3–5 years of experience in program management, M&E, research, or a related function in international development or humanitarian response.
  • Demonstrated experience with qualitative research methods, including at least two of: focus group discussions, key informant interviews, user testing, or participatory research.
  • Strong analytical skills and comfort using data to track performance and inform decisions; proficiency in Excel required, with experience in survey tools (e.g., ODK, KoboToolbox) highly desirable.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both Portuguese and English, including the ability to synthesize complex findings into concise, audience-appropriate outputs.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple workstreams simultaneously, make progress under uncertainty, and iterate quickly based on emerging evidence.
  • Strong interpersonal and coordination skills, with demonstrated ability to work effectively across functions — engaging programs, research, and global product teams to align on priorities, manage competing demands, and drive work forward collaboratively.
  • Ability to work independently and proactively in a field-based setting while maintaining strong upward communication about risks and blockers.
  • Experience working in Mozambique, with familiarity with cultural, logistical, and operational dynamics in the country.

Desirable

  • Prior experience in product development, program design, or innovation-focused roles, ideally involving iterative prototyping or piloting in field settings.
  • Experience working in fragile, conflict-affected, or displacement-affected contexts - particularly in northern Mozambique or comparable environments.
  • Familiarity with social protection programs, cash transfer delivery models, or complementary programming such as coaching, savings groups, or nutrition.
  • Understanding of experimental design concepts (randomization, treatment/control, power calculations) and/or experience with A/B testing in program delivery.
  • Experience using statistical tools (R, Python, Stata) for data analysis is an asset, though not required.
  • Existing relationships with community structures, local government, or partner organizations in Nampula Province.
