Discover Impactful Work:

Join Thermo Fisher Scientific’s Ion Torrent NGS Chip Sensors team and help shape the future of semiconductor-based sequencing technology. In this collaborative and hands-on role, you’ll apply engineering principles, physics, chemistry, and mathematical modeling to enhance the design, fabrication, and performance of highly sensitive biosensing chips that power next-generation genetic analysis.

You will work closely with cross-functional experts in the United States and Taiwan, combining insights from electrical engineering, physical sciences, and data analytics to advance sensor technology that drives our Clinical Sequencing Division (CSD) portfolio.

A day in the Life:

  • Lead and support experimental and analytical projects related to semiconductor-based biological sensors with guidance and collaboration from senior mentors.
  • Apply concepts from physics, chemistry, and mathematics to model, interpret, and optimize sensor performance.
  • Analyze experimental and production data; use statistical tools and Python scripting to automate and improve data analysis workflows.
  • Partner with engineering, chemistry, and process-development teams across sites in the US and Taiwan to evaluate new designs, materials, and process improvements.
  • Communicate findings clearly through presentations, technical reports, and collaborative discussions.
  • Contribute to process development, sensor characterization, and technology transfer activities.

Keys to Success:

  • Preferred: Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Applied Mathematics, or a related field.

Experience

  • 3+ years of relevant research or industry experience with a bachelor’s degree, or 1+ years with a Master’s or Ph.D.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects with mentorship and to deliver results independently.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical information effectively.
  • Experience with data analysis and Python programming (e.g., NumPy, pandas, matplotlib).

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Familiarity with semiconductor manufacturing or microfabrication processes (e.g., photolithography, thin-film deposition, MEMS structures).
  • Knowledge of electrochemical sensing, surface chemistry, or statistical modeling of physical systems.
  • Experience with data visualization and statistical software (e.g., JMP, R, Python).
