Process Engineer

Cleveland-Cliffs has an immediate opening for a Process Engineer at our United Taconite LLC Forbes, MN Processing Plant. The primary responsibility of the Process Engineer is to provide leadership focused improvement opportunities in the process that will optimize production through data and process observations. Optimizations are intended to be long term and sustainable. Position will involve data generation and reporting improvements. Analysis will be from Mine product to final pellet leaving the plant, and individual efforts will shift from area to area depending on constraint.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Monitor production and categorize production gains/losses to availability, utilization, and operating practices.
  • Work with operations, technical services, maintenance, reliability, and business support managers to help prioritize findings to improve plant performance.  Determine decisions based on overall financial impact.
  • Initiate work/project and follow through to reconcile benefits of projects with the various teams.
  • Direct technical services to investigate areas that production has shifted over time.
  • Create new communications dashboards to help display plant health for the broader audience and convert data generated to a presentable format for management teams and various stakeholders.
  • Monitor bottlenecks and direct technical services to determine whether capital investments should be requested.
  • Review and ensure that equipment is operating properly and within manufacture’s specifications.
  • Inventory and production monitoring for Crusher, Concentrator and Pellet Plant to help ensure business hits planned production goals long term and prevent decay overtime.
  • Develop crew metrics, tracking and look for elevated variation to drive stability in operations.
  • Hands on and field presence for data gathering and solutions follow through is expected.  Review findings in the field before passing them along to the various teams.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:  

  • B.S. in Engineering, Metallurgy, or equivalent accredited institution.
  • Prior work experience within an industrial facility.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal skills and a positive attitude.
  • Skilled in completing mass balances for different unit operations
  • Applicants for this position must be currently legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering or Metallurgical Engineering.
  • 3-5 years engineering experience in heavy industry or mining/mineral processing.
  • Knowledge of crushes, cyclones, screens, magnetic separators and various grinding mills
  • Proficient in Pi plant monitoring tool
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, Project, Power Point, Power BI

Relocation assistance may be considered for highly qualified candidates from outside the local area. 

The salary range for this role is $56,000 to $135,000.  An employee’s pay within the salary range will be based on numerous factors including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, geographic location and business or organizational needs.
