Northrop Grumman Space Systems—Missile Defense Integration offers an excellent opportunity for a Principal Systems Administrator (24-137) to join our team of talented and diverse professionals. Based at Schriever Space Force Base in Colorado Springs, CO, this role is crucial in supporting the U.S. President, the Secretary of Defense, and combatant commanders at strategic, regional, and operational levels.

 

This position does not provide relocation assistance and requires on-site work with no remote options.

 

Position Overview:

 

The Command and Control, Battle Management, and Communications (C2BMC) program is a vital part of the Missile Defense System. It provides a crucial operational platform that enables the U.S. president, the secretary of defense, and combatant commanders at strategic, regional, and tactical levels to systematically plan missile defense operations, monitor battle progress, and actively control networked sensors and weapon systems to meet global and regional mission goals. C2BMC offers a layered missile defense capability, providing an optimized response to threats across all ranges and flight phases. It acts as a force multiplier by connecting, integrating, and synchronizing autonomous sensor and weapon systems and operations both worldwide and locally to enhance overall performance. Additionally, C2BMC is a key element in all ground and flight tests that verify and demonstrate the missile defense system's current and future capabilities.

 

We are seeking a knowledgeable, technically proficient Systems Administrator to oversee and support a diverse, dynamic IT environment, with a focus on modern infrastructure and development practices. The ideal candidate will have experience with server setup, deployment, and maintenance, as well as a thorough understanding of Linux system administration. This role demands the ability to adapt in a fast-paced, Agile environment, contributing to both stability and innovation. Responsible for operating, maintaining, and managing Linux-based systems that support a software development environment. Also responsible for the daily operations of the Windows/Linux environment, including backup, recovery, and disaster recovery of system data.

 

Essential Functions:

 

·         Manage all aspects of Linux-based systems, including server installation, configuration, monitoring, maintenance, and application management, to ensure optimal performance, security, and reliability

·         Regularly back up and test data systems to confirm they function correctly and backups can be restored successfully, forming part of a strong disaster recovery plan

·         Ensure compliance with security policies by regularly applying updates and patches for operating systems, applications, and security, keeping antivirus tools updated, and proactively managing system vulnerabilities or security incidents

·         Create and update comprehensive IT documentation, including configuration details, system administration procedures, server images, security groups, user account management, and software distribution packages

·         Configure and maintain storage systems, monitor resource usage, and recommend upgrades, replacements, or process improvements to ensure scalability and efficiency

·         Support both server and desktop environments by deploying and maintaining standardized Linux desktop and notebook images, ensuring systems meet compliance requirements and organizational standards

·         Collaborate with internal teams, including the Help Desk, to troubleshoot and resolve end-user issues while offering technical guidance when needed

·         Assist in managing IT assets and support other tasks assigned by the IT Site Lead or IT Manager to help achieve the organization's overall IT goals

·         Must be a skilled problem-solver and able to work well with team members in a fast-paced environment

 

Basic Qualifications:

 

Please list your current security clearance and IAT or relevant certifications on your resume, if applicable.

 

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field from an accredited university is preferred, along with 5 years of experience; or a Master’s degree in a related field with 3 years of relevant work experience; or 9 years of relevant work experience may be considered as an alternative to a degree

  • Applicants must have a current, active in-scope DoD-issued Top Secret security clearance at the time of application, which is required to start

  • Applicants must hold a current, active DoD 8140 certification at IAT Level II or higher (such as Security+, CCNA Security, CySA+, GICSP, GSEC, SSCP, etc.) when applying, which is required to start. The candidate is responsible for maintaining their DoD 8140 certification for the entire duration of the contract

  • Expert-level knowledge of Linux environments, including proficiency in Linux system administration, shell scripting, Red Hat Linux (using Atlassian tools such as Confluence and Jira), and Ansible playbook development for efficient system configuration and management

  • Strong knowledge of security principles, including Security-Enhanced Linux (SELinux) and system-level security measures

  • Experience managing Red Hat repositories in enterprise environments

  • Proficiency in deploying and managing containers with technologies such as:

    • Docker and Kubernetes, along with a strong understanding of containerization concepts and orchestration

  • Practical knowledge of configuration-managed Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) environments, utilizing modern tools to enhance scalability and reliability

  • Solid understanding of IT's role in Continuous Integration and Delivery (CI/CD) pipelines and the ability to apply CI/CD principles effectively within a PaaS framework

  • Knowledge of Agile principles and processes, along with the ability to work effectively within Agile teams

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
