As the Principal Engineer for Shared Platforms & Services, you will play a pivotal role in evolving the core technology foundation that powers Levi Strauss & Co.'s digital ecosystem. You will architect and mature the platforms, services, and infrastructure that enable our engineering teams to deliver resilient, scalable, and secure systems. Reporting into the Sr. Director, Platform Engineering & Shared Services, you will lead with technical excellence. You will provide thought partnership across engineering domains. You will drive responsible use of generative and agentic AI. You will help shape a world-class platform organization that accelerates product delivery across the enterprise.
About the Job
- Lead the evolution of modern engineering toolchains and practices, including CI/CD, automated testing, code review, observability, and infrastructure automation. Integrate generative/agentic AI to improve developer productivity, incident response, and software quality.
- Architect, develop, and mentor teams to build extensible, maintainable, and reusable platform components, frameworks, and shared services for an AI-powered future.
- Define and champion platform standards for reliability, scalability, reusability, simplicity, security, and responsible AI and data-privacy practices.
- Establish best practices for coding, integration, validation, and quality metrics, driving consistency and maintainability across teams.
- Lead adoption of domain-driven design, event-driven architecture, distributed systems, and modular platform patterns.
- Provide expert architectural guidance for complex engineering challenges, ensuring interoperable, domain-based, and scalable platform architecture.
- Champion engineering excellence through agile leadership, DevSecOps practices, platform-as-a-product principles, and data-informed decision-making.
- Stay ahead of platform, cloud, and AI/ML industry trends; lead experimentation and thoughtful adoption of emerging technologies.
- Partner across Engineering, Security, Production Support, Product Management, UX, and Commercial teams to align platform capabilities with enterprise needs.
- Influence stakeholders, drive platform adoption, and improve developer experience to accelerate product delivery.
- Foster a product-led, customer-centric culture rooted in reliability, scalability, and intuitive platform capabilities.
- Mentor and grow engineering talent, support hiring efforts, and cultivate expertise in platform engineering, AI, modern development practices and distributed systems.
- Communicate complex technical concepts clearly across audiences-building excitement and alignment around platform modernization and AI enablement.
About You
- 12+ years of experience in product, software, and/or platform engineering roles, with a strong focus on platform architecture, cloud technologies (GCP, Azure), distributed systems, and modern engineering toolchains.
- At least 4 years of experience focused on AI/ML, with deep expertise in generative and agentic AI and their application to modern engineering workflows.
- Unwavering customer-focused ethos, placing internal developers, platform customers and end consumers at the core of all decisions.
- Demonstrated success leading cross-functional engineering initiatives and working with geographically distributed teams across time zones.
- Mastery of modern SDLC practices, agile methodologies, CI/CD, DevSecOps, observability, and the broader DevOps movement, with demonstrated improvements to delivery performance.
- Demonstrable ability to drive architectural and operational decisions.
This is a remote or hybrid work schedule based in our San Francisco, CA headquarters. If based in San Francisco, you will be expected in office 3 days per week typically Tuesday-Thursday. Note, time in office can vary depending on business needs.
The expected starting salary range for this role is $144,800 - $241,200 per year. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range based on the location of the role. The amount a particular employee will earn within the salary range will be based on factors such as relevant education, qualifications, performance and business needs.
