As Principal Engineer, Content Supply Chain, you will be the domain’s senior-most individual contributor, accountable for setting technical direction, influencing platform architecture, and ensuring delivery excellence. You will be responsible for designing and developing robust, scalable platforms that streamline content workflows, manage digital assets efficiently, and deliver consistent, high-quality content across all consumer touchpoints. You will partner closely with engineering, product, and business leaders across Marketing, Creative Operations, and Technology to translate Target’s content strategy into scalable systems and services.
Your role spans hands-on architecture, deep collaboration, and organizational influence — bringing together engineering excellence, platform thinking, and pragmatic execution to power enterprise-wide content capabilities. You will report into the Director of Technology, Content Supply Chain, MarTech.
Key Responsibilities:
Define and evolve the technical architecture for Target’s Content Supply Chain, including Digital Asset Management (DAM), Content Metadata systems, and content workflow orchestration.
Ensure platforms are scalable, performant, and resilient, leveraging cloud-native and domain-driven designs.
Collaborate deeply with product and business partners, aligning technology strategy with creative and marketing objectives.
Partner with global teams to integrate content systems with downstream experiences — from marketing personalization to retail guest touchpoints.
Translate complex business needs into technical outcomes, balancing innovation with reliability and cost efficiency.
Serve as a trusted advisor to product, design, and business leaders — shaping roadmaps and influencing prioritization.
Experiment with and advocate for AI-assisted content workflows, automation, and metadata enrichment.
Contribute to Target’s broader MarTech evolution, interfacing with teams driving customer data, personalization, and campaign activation.
Mentor senior engineers and contribute to community forums across Target Tech, fostering a culture of learning and craftsmanship.

About You:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience.
15+ years of software engineering experience, including 3+ years in architecture or principal-level roles.
Proven expertise in digital asset management, content workflows, or content metadata platforms at enterprise scale is a plus
Deep understanding of distributed systems, cloud-native design and microservices architectures.
Strong business acumen and demonstrated success collaborating with product and business stakeholders.
Ability to work with cross geographic teams.
Experience with CI/CD pipelines, observability tools, and event-driven systems.
Exceptional communication and storytelling skills — able to bridge technical and non-technical conversations.
Passion for mentoring, technical excellence, and solving complex business challenges through technology.
This position will operate as a Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement based on Target’s needs. A Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement means the team member’s core role will need to be performed both onsite at the Target HQ MN location the role is assigned to and virtually, depending upon what your role, team and tasks require for that day.
