This position is for a Lead Principal Electrical Engineer to support the Common Cable Team (CCT) helping amongst all programs at Space Systems Sector, Launch and Exploration Division, Launch Systems Business Unit in Chandler, AZ.

The Chandler group performs cradle-to-grave engineering on many of their launch vehicles. They are working on approximately 15 separate vehicles at any given time, among them are Antares, Minotaur, Pegasus, GMD, Sentinel, and many more. Their products serve a variety of purposes including ISS (International Space Station) cargo re-supply, deploying defense satellites, developing missile interceptor technology, and providing much needed target vehicles to better hone our military capability. This means you can be part of the design, operations planning, ground support development, analysis, testing, integration, launch operations and more. There is plenty to do and learn that will reinforce your existing skillsets while also helping you learn what it takes to get a rocket to lift off and achieve orbit. Our department has a good variety of sub-groups to choose from where you can roll up your sleeves to become an industry expert or opt to pursue a more well-rounded approach while learning a little about everything.

Job Duties:

Based on specific objectives, perform analysis, design, and/or test of complex designs.  Perform comprehensive review of internal, external and range requirements to support launch vehicle system level design and vehicle subsystem design.  As an Electrical Common Cable Team Lead, you will be responsible for the design of electrical harnesses for power distribution, RF, communication and high-speed data signal, selection of harness components and hardware, connectors, backshells, cable and wire. Also understanding and application of EMI/RFI and harness shielding. Creation of harness detail and installation drawings. Support design configuration development and trade studies, provide technical guidance for hardware installation. Support the assembly and testing of cables and harnesses and maintain and report on activity schedule and technical status and find opportunities for improvements and operational cost and schedule savings. Mentor other engineers from a technical standpoint as well as perform senior peer review. Collaborate early and often with other engineering disciplines and operations/manufacturing groups.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge in electrical engineering and related disciplines to evaluate designs and provide technical guidance.
  • Lead a team of electrical engineers focused on cable design in a dynamic and high-demand environment.
  • Oversee, prioritize, and balance program workloads across the team to meet project requirements and deadlines.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for team progress and deliverable status.
  • Study basic design concepts and criteria for more complex problems.
  • Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to address cable requirements and resolve issues impacting system design.
  • Apply a thorough understanding of company electrical engineering technical standards to ensure compliance and quality in designs.
  • Foster a collaborative and positive team environment by contributing constructively to discussions and supporting team decisions.
  • Escalate concerns or issues appropriately when resolution is beyond the team’s scope.
  • Assess and manage design uncertainties and risks while ensuring deadlines are met.
  • Prepare and submit weekly status reports and present comprehensive quarterly status briefings to leadership.
  • Conduct formal peer reviews of straightforward engineering designs to support the development of less experienced team members.
  • Provide additional hands-on engineering support during high-demand periods or urgent project needs.
  • Execute daily responsibilities autonomously, with minimal oversight required from senior engineers.
  • Maintain safety as the top priority in all activities and decisions related to the role.
  • Apply electrical engineering principles to adapt or improve upon heritage features from previous successful designs of a similar nature.
  • Makes an extra effort to provide quality internal and external customer service.
  • Constantly seeks new sources of information and provides information necessary to meet customer needs.
  • Provides formal peer review of engineering designs or analyses for team members.
  • Mentoring and cross-training team members across a diverse set of technologies and equipment architectures used to meet customer requirements.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Requires 5 years with a Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering or 3 years with a Master’s in Electrical Engineering.
  • Prior Experience designing Wire Harnesses for the Aerospace industry.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active DoD Secret Security Clearance, or higher.
  • Siemens Capital software experience.
  • Jira experience.
  • Teamcenter experience.
  • Understanding and application of wire and component derating analysis.
  • Familiar with existing applicable harness standards: IPC/WHMA-A-620A, NASA-STD-8739.4.
  • Release of engineering documentation including technical drawings, specifications, and test procedures.
  • Experience designing and integrating electrical harnessing for spacecraft, launch vehicles, or aircraft.

Primary Level Salary Range: $98,400.00 - $147,600.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
